A presentation on the life of Marie Maynard Daly, the first African American woman to receive a doctorate in chemistry, will be held Feb. 15 at 10 a.m. in Room 6072 at InterAmerican Campus, 627 S.W. 27 Ave.
“Marie Maynard Daly proved that to be a good scientist, the only thing that matters is your knowledge,” said Oliesia Gonzalez Quinones, a chemistry lab instructor at the campus.
Daly was born in Queens, New York and received her doctorate in chemistry from Columbia University in 1947. Daly and cardiologist Quentin Deming began their research on the connection between high cholesterol and clogged arteries. Many of Daly’s contributions to chemistry helped form a better understanding of the human body.
