The Miami Dade College Summer High School Journalism Institute
The Miami Dade College High School Journalism Institute is an intensive six-week dual-enrollment summer program for high school students interested in careers in journalism. Students from the program’s inaugural class, which took place from June 19-July 28, learned how to write news and feature stories, take photographs and work on headline and caption writing. The team of student reporters, which included students from Miami Norland Senior High School, the School for Advanced Studies at Wolfson Campus, Miami Palmetto Senior High School, Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior High School, and Hialeah Senior High School, produced an eight-page newspaper—The Lead—at the end of the semester. These are the students who participated in the cohort.

Allessandra Inzinna, 16, served as editor-in-chief of The Lead during the summer of 2017. Inzinna, a rising junior at Miami Palmetto Senior High School, is currently the features editor of The Panther, her school’s student newspaper. She aspires to be an investigative journalist in order to expose injustices and corruption in government.

Roxy Garcia, 16, served as news editor of The Lead during the summer of 2017. Garcia, a rising junior at Hialeah Senior High School, is currently the editor-in-chief at her school’s student newspaper, The Record. She aspires to obtain a bachelor’s degree in English education from Florida International University and become a public school teacher.

Olivia Lafuente, 17, served as the A/E editor for The Lead during the summer of 2017. Lafuente, a rising senior at the School for Advanced Studies at Miami Dade College’s Wolfson Campus, will receive her high school and associate of arts degree at the completion of the 2017-18 school year. She aspires to do research in cultural anthropology. Her hobbies include writing, photography, fashion, and painting.
