Manolo Barco, the media adviser to The Reporter, was inducted into the Florida College System Activities Association’s Hall of Fame on Jan. 25 during the organizations publications conference in Tampa.
The FCSAA’s Hall of Fame inducts administrators, advisers, coaches, and students who have contributed a minimum of 10 years to the organization. Inductees are selected by their peers based on their state-college contributions.
Barco, 46, is in his 12th year as media adviser to the student newspapers at Miami Dade College. During his tenure, The Reporter has won National Pacemakers in 2013 and 2014 and more than 100 awards from the Florida College System Press Association.
He previously worked as a criminal justice reporter at the Dallas Morning News in Texas and as a staff writer at the Miami Herald. A graduate of Florida International University and MDC’s North Campus, Barco served as editor-in-chief of the now-defunct Falcon Times in 1994.
“I’m blessed to have had the opportunity to mentor so many hardworking and talented students,” Barco said. “This award is for them.”
