Lady Sharks Assistant Volleyball Coach, James Exley, has been named the American Volleyball Coaches Association Two-Year College National Assistant Coach of the Year.

“I was really ecstatic,” Exley said, “kind of shocking since it’s a big award.”

The award comes on the heels of the Lady Sharks 30-4 season that included  three wins at the National Junior College Athletic Association Tournament. The team finished second in the nation at the tournament.

After a short stint serving as assistant coach of the Lady Sharks, Exley became the Head Boys Volleyball Coach at Miami Coral Park Senior High School in 2001. He accumulated a  161-31 record during six seasons at Coral Park  including four district championships and three regional championships.

Exley rejoined the Miami Dade College volleyball program in 2006.

“It’s like a system of checks and balances,” Exley said. “We push each other to be better and try to strengthen the weaknesses that we each possess.”
