Freshman Providing Steady Offense For Sharks

Guard Marvin Jean-Pierre has provided the Miami Dade College men’s basketball team with efficient and steady offensive production this year, scoring in double digits in seven of the Sharks first nine games this year.

The 6-foot-3 freshman from Pompano Beach is averaging 11.7 points and 6.2 rebounds a game, including a 23 point, seven rebound effort against Chipola College in the Sharks 83-77 loss on Nov. 25.

“He is a great offensive rebounder and provides a level of toughness that we really need,” said men’s Head Basketball Coach, Stephen Cowherd.

Jean-Pierre began playing basketball at the age of 13. He played high school ball at  Deerfield Beach High School where he averaged 21.9 points, 8.4 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game during his senior year. He was the leading scorer in Broward County that year.

He decided to come to MDC because it is close to home and it afforded him the opportunity to spend time with his family and do with he loves—play basketball.

The team is currently 7-2, including a 4-1 record in Southern Conference play.

While at MDC, Jean-Pierre said he hopes to improve his shooting and ball handling skills. He wants to  bring energy and a championship to MDC, he said.

“I think that he is a great player, strong, and efficacious,” said freshman forward Macoumba Kane. “ He [has] helped us on offensive rebound that we really needed, and can score anytime he wants because he has talent.”

The Sharks next home game is versus TAAG Academy Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. at the Theodore R. Gibson Health Center, 11011 S.W.104 St. Admission to all games is free.
