The Kardashians Are Entering A New Era In Reality TV—This Time On Hulu
There are the Kennedys, the Obamas and The Kardashians. Few families have gained such widespread recognition that their last name has become synonymous with fame.
Whether you like them or not, the Kardashian family has had a deep and lasting impact on our current culture.
This ranges from determining beauty standards to influencing presidential pardons.
The Kardashians were never a typical family even without the infamous leak of Kim Kardashian’s sex tape that catapulted the family into the tabloids in the early 2000s.
The patriarch of the family was—Robert Kardashian—OJ Simpson’s lawyer. Their stepfather, Bruce Jenner, was a famous Olympian and Kim Kardashian, was publicly known as Paris Hilton’s best friend and assistant.
In a way, the Kardashian family has always been intertwined with American culture.
Therefore it is not surprising that their original reality show Keeping Up With The Kardashians was widely successful and had a 20-year run.
Not only that, but the family expanded their business tremendously. They went on to become social media influencers, makeup moguls, clothing brand creators and models.
Eventually, they outgrew the show that gave them their start and they left it in 2021.
However, they didn’t stray far from reality TV life for too long as they have returned for a new show, The Kardashians on Hulu.
With a new network and a different chapter of their lives, comes a new type of show that was released on April 14.
The new show aims to paint a more complete picture of their daily lives. A picture that not only includes but highlights the more mundane parts of their lives such as cleaning their kids’ room.
In a family whose extravagant antics are regularly documented, getting a peek into the more normal moments is a rarity.
While the original show might have felt like a well-crafted brand advertisement for the family, this new show aims to be closer to a documentary.
The show’s executive producer, Ben Winston, told Variety that he pitched the show as a story of six billionaire businesswomen who are all sisters. He thinks that is fascinating and not just because they are the Kardashian Family.
The Kardashian’s approach has also affected the way the episodes are shot. There is more interaction with the fourth wall.
Whether it be Kim’s eldest son tapping on the camera or Kim talking to the camera over the kitchen sink, the cameraman is acknowledged and embraced.
The show will also follow Khloé Kardashian and Tristan Thompson’s relationship, as well as Kylie Jenner’s second pregnancy and Kourtney Kardashian’s entire relationship with Travis Barker, from falling in love to getting sort-of married in a Las Vegas ceremony officiated by an Elvis Presley impersonator.
Whether you end up watching the show or not, I am sure you’ll hear about it and that in a way is the Kardashian power. They are inescapable and ubiquitous.
