MDC Student Selected As New Century Transfer Pathway Scholar
Carlen Arevalo, a second-year business student at The Honors College at Eduardo J. Padrón Campus, was selected as a New Century Transfer Pathway Scholar on March 3.
Arevalo earned the $1,250 award for being the student with the most academic excellence on the All-USA Academic Team in Florida.
“I remember bursting into tears immediately,” Arevalo said. “I am excited and feel blessed to be taking one step further towards a higher education.”
Arevalo serves as the vice president of scholarship and leadership for Beta Kappa Iota—the Phi Theta Kappa chapter at Padrón Campus. She also is the president of the Meriyaki Youth community service club and a co-organizer for Jovenes Contra el Cáncer (youth against cancer) foundation.
The 20-year-old, who was also selected as a Jack Kent Cooke semifinalist, will graduate in April with her associate’s degree. She plans to transfer to Columbia University in New York City or Babson College in Massachusetts.
