Wolfson And North Campuses To Feature Ukhamba Exhibit

The Germane Barnes: Ukhamba exhibit, which contemplates the history and culture of the African diaspora and its impact on classical architecture, is making two appearances at Miami Dade College.

It will be featured at Wolfson Campus, 300 NE 2nd Ave., in the building 1 plaza, from Nov. 12 through Feb. 24. In the spring, North Campus, 11380 NW 27th Ave.(site to be announced), will host the exhibit from March 11 through May 26.

Ukhamba refers to traditional South African rimless vessels made from raw materials for drinking and serving sorghum-based beer. Designed by American architect Germane Barnes, the exhibit features a ten-foot-tall, circular, wooden pavilion with four arched openings.

Barnes earned a bachelor’s of science degree in architecture from the University of Illinois in 2008 and a master’s of architecture from Woodbury University four years later.

His work studies the relationship between architecture and identity and has been featured in the Museum of Modern Art, the National Museum of African American History, The New York Times, and other institutions.
