MDC-TV Wins Gold And Silver Communicator Awards

Miami Dade College’s television station, MDC-TV, has added gold and silver Communicator Awards to their trophy case.

The awards, which recognize innovation, distinction and excellence in multimedia communication, were announced on May 5.

MDC-TV received the following honors:

  • A Gold Communicator Award for Wellness Mind Set in the General Fitness, Health & Wellness category.
  • A Silver Communicator Award for the Hispanic Heritage Month project.

“Winning a Communicator Award is always meaningful, especially because they recognize the kind of work we believe in—storytelling with purpose,” said MDC-TV executive director Ariel Rubalcava. “This is special to us because our main subject was our students.”

Wellness Mind Set is a reality-based series designed to open conversations about the emotional wellness and real-life challenges that young adults face. The project was produced by MDC alumni Maria Kowalski and Andreina Pradas, directed by Alfonso Kohn, with technical support from Amed Torrecilla and Richard De La Vega.

The series is designed to encourage empathy, connection, and awareness across all MDC campuses.

“It means a lot because it shows us that the topic of mental health is very relevant and important,” Kowalski said. “The core of the content in itself, which was to open the conversation, to bring light into mental health, and to listen to the students, was for me, the most important part as it is why we began this project.”

Hispanic Heritage Month is a 29-second promotional video featuring eleven Hispanic artists to celebrate their achievements and contributions to the United States. This project was produced by MDC-TV producer Tony Leal, with audio by Torrecilla and video engineering by De La Vega.

“From concept to execution, this is what happens when talent and teamwork come together,” Rubalcava said.

MDC-TV can be found on Comcast channel 78, Atlantic Broadband channel 78, AT&T U-Verse channel 99 and their YouTube channel.
