Kendall Campus Hosts Composition Competition

On April 12th, MDC Kendall Campus hosted its 25th Annual Jane Pyle Composition Competition.

The contest created by the late music professor, Jane Pyle, awards a $1,000 grand prize to the student who puts together the most creative musical composition.

This year’s first place winner was Flavio Rocha for his piece, “Monk Invades China”. Second place was awarded to Matthew Smith for his piano piece, “Hominis Nocturna” and third place went to Alan Quinones for his composition, “Time”.

To take part in the competition, students were required to submit a recording and hard copy of their original work. The judges were  New World School of the Arts composition professor Fred De Sena, MDC adjunct music business professor Lawrence Moore, and MDC songwriting professor Steven Quinzi. They judged each piece according to the following criteria: maturity, completeness, strength and clarity of melody, harmonic form and lyrics.

The program was coordinated by music theory professor Hector Vazquez and was conducted by music history professor  Eugene Greco.
