Dual Enrollment Student Finds Loaded Handgun At Kendall Campus

A dual enrollment student at Kendall Campus found a loaded handgun in a grassy area near the N building, according to a Miami-Dade Police Department report.

The gun did not have a bullet in the chamber, MDPD officer Gregory Roberts said.

“I was honestly in disbelief,” said 18-year-old Brianna Acevedo, who found the weapon. “I was so unsure of everything that was happening…everything just felt so surreal.”

Acevedo reported the incident on Feb. 3 at around 9:30 a.m. She discovered the black .22 caliber pistol laying on the ground about two feet from a patio-style table she was sitting at next to building N before one of her classes at the campus started.

An hour before the incident was reported, a public safety officer noticed a 5-foot-9 inch tall white male with red hair and a beard sitting in the area where the gun was discovered. The man—who was wearing a white sleeve T-shirt, black swimming trunks, black and green sneakers, and a black cap with a fish pattern—was “acting strange,” according to a public safety report.

When the man was approached by a public safety officer, he asked the officer to use her cell phone. He said his phone was broken and a friend had taken his money and dropped him off at the campus, according to the report.

A few minutes later, the student reported finding the gun. The area was searched but the man was not found.

Roberts said the gun’s owner has not been identified but the case is closed.
