Stephanie Fernandez, a former staff writer for The Reporter, has earned an internship with WSVN 7. Fernandez, 23, started her semester-long position with WSVN 7 on Jan. 23 as a writer.

“I loved my experience at The Reporter,” Fernandez said. “It was all the experience I gained at The Reporter that taught me everything I know.”

Fernandez was a staff writer based at Kendall Campus from September of 2013 to December of 2014. She won second place for in-depth reporting in 2014 from the Florida College System Publications Association. While at The Reporter, Fernandez wrote articles about a spate of vandalism at Kendall, a new mobile surveillance tower at North Campus, and a preview of the play Dracula.

As an intern at WSVN, she attends shoots with reporters, videographers and works on the assignment desk.

While she’s interning at WSVN 7, she will continue  to study at Florida International University, where she’s majoring in broadcast journalism. She also writes for the student newspaper at FIU, The Panther Press, formerly known as The Beacon.

“This internship has opened my eyes a lot. You learn something new every day,” Fernandez said. “You don’t learn all journalism from a book; you really learn a lot from internships.”

She aspires to work as an anchor for a local news station.
