MDC To Host Grammy Award-Winning Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra

Live Arts Miami will host Grammy award-winning artist Arturo O’Farrill and his Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra at the Miami Beach Bandshell on Oct. 21 at 8 p.m. 

O’Farril, a Mexican-born musician who has been championing the Latin-Jazz community for more than 20 years, and his 20-piece orchestra will perform world-renowned compositions, including The Manteca Suite and AfroCuban Jazz Suite

This is the first time the full orchestra will be bringing their talents to Miami. 

“I encourage students to take advantage of this experience,” said Kathryn Garcia, executive director of Live Arts Miami. “It’s a really wonderful opportunity to have exposure to all sorts of wonderful artists, from all over the world, in our own backyard, creating amazing work for free!”

Olivia Valkenburg

Olivia Valkenburg, 25, is a mass communications major at Wolfson Campus. After graduating in 2017 from Fusion Academy Englewood in New Jersey, Valkenburg studied at Fordham University in New York City before relocating to Miami during the coronavirus pandemic. She will serve as a news writer for The Reporter during the 2023-2024 school year. Valkenburg aspires to work in the public relations field.
