MDC-TV Nominated For Three Suncoast Regional Emmy Awards

For the 13th year in a row, MDC-TV has been nominated for a prestigious Suncoast Regional Emmy Award.

MDC-TV, which has accumulated 24 nominations throughout the years, earned two Emmy nods for Beyond the Silence in the arts & entertainment—long form category and for music composition/arrangement. Actors Spotlight, Ethan Hawke received the third nomination for interview/discussion program.

The awards, celebrating their 50th anniversary, recognize excellence in media and television in the South Florida region. They are  presented by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

Winners will be announced on Dec. 5 at the Diplomat Beach Resort in Hollywood, Florida at 7:30 p.m.

“It shows how when people get together to try to do great projects, your dreams can come true,” said Ariel Rubalcava, the executive director of the station. “Thirteen  years of nominations is just beyond my wildest dreams.”

Beyond the Silence was a project made by Miami Dade College music students in collaboration with MDC-TV. Through the venture, students composed original scores from silent films that are more than a century old.

“These little sparks of recognition throughout our careers serve to fire us up as we move forward in life,” said Alberto Bade, music professor and orchestral director, who directed the project. “One day, [students will] go to their next college or university, and when they’re like, ‘I don’t know if I can do this,’ they’ll remember, ‘Hey, I have an Emmy nomination!’”

Actors Spotlight, Ethan Hawke at MDC-TV, was part of a series the station hosted in collaboration with the Miami Film Festival last November. School of Entertainment & Design Technology professor Adrian Garcia conducted the interview.

In 2023, MDC-TV got an Emmy nomination in the same category for an interview with actor Nicholas Cage.

“It’s not about me being up there on the stage or getting nominated for a regional Emmy. That doesn’t mean anything,” Garcia said. “We’re not the center of the industry. No films really get shot down here, so the kids sometimes feel really disconnected from the industry, and it’s an opportunity for them to see the dream, and hopefully believe in the dream.”

MDC-TV can be found on Comcast channel 78, Atlantic Broadband channel 78, AT&T U-Verse channel 99 and YouTube.
