National And Local Leaders Scheduled To Speak At MDC Commencement Ceremonies On April 23

Pro Football Hall of Famer Jason Taylor, Florida Lieutenant Governor Jeannette Nuñez and United States Surgeon General Vivek Murthy are scheduled to be commencement ceremony speakers at Miami Dade College’s graduation ceremonies at loanDepot Park on April 23.

Taylor, 47, will speak during the 8:30 a.m. ceremony for North, Eduardo J. Padrón and West campuses. He is a former American football defensive end and outside linebacker who played with the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League for most of his career. Taylor attended the University of Akron as a political science and criminal justice student and was a two-time first-team All-Mid-American Conference selection during his junior and senior years. In 2004, he became the third person to be inducted into Akron’s Ring of Honor.

Murthy, 44, will speak during the 1:30 p.m. ceremony for Wolfson, Medical and Homestead campuses. He was appointed as the 21st Surgeon General of the U.S. last March. His duties are to provide clear and consistent guidance and resources to the public in order to work toward a healthy country. He has a bachelor’s degree in biochemical sciences from Harvard University, a master’s degree from Yale University in medicine and a master of business administration in healthcare management.

Nuñez, 49, will speak during the 6:30 p.m. ceremony for Kendall and Hialeah campuses. In 2018, she was elected as the first Hispanic female Lieutenant Governor of Florida and previously served as a State Representative of the Florida House of Representatives for eight years. She earned a bachelor’s degree in international relations and political science and a master’s degree in public administration from Florida International University.

Veronica Romano, 18, is a mass communication/journalism major at Wolfson Campus. Romano, who graduated from Miami Beach Senior High School in 2021, will serve as briefing writer for The Reporter during the 2022-2023 school year. She aspires to work in the media industry.
