North Campus Appoints New Director Of Retention And Transition Services

Gabriela Cardenas started as the new director of retention and transition services at North Campus on Dec. 5. 

Cardenas, 30, plans to increase student retention and will oversee Advisement, Single Stop and the TRIO and ACCESS programs at North Campus. 

Prior to her current role, Cardenas served a year-long stint as the director of recruitment at North Campus. At the College, she has also served in pre-college, college and international student advising roles from 2018 to 2021.

“Now that I have recruited students to MDC, I am determined to explore new ways to retain them,” Cardenas said. 

Before Miami Dade College, Cardenas served as marketing ambassador for CytoSport—a sports supplement company—from 2012 to 2015 before serving for three years as a cultural representative and English professor for the Spanish Ministry of Education in Madrid.

Cardenas earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology from Florida International University in 2014. Four years later, she earned a master’s degree in international and comparative education from FIU.

Hugo Guillen

Hugo Guillen, 21, is a psychology major at North Campus. Guillen, who graduated high school from Colegio y Academia Trilce in Peru in 2016, will serve as a briefing, forum and A/E writer for The Reporter during the 2023-2024 school year. He aspires to become a writer.
