Reporter Alumnus Lands Internship With Sports Website Pelota Cubana

Jose Tovar, who served as sports editor for The Reporter during the 2020-21 school year, was selected for a summer internship with the sports website Pelota Cubana. The Spanish sports media outlet is billed as “The Best Website About Cuban Baseball.”

Tovar, 20, started his internship in April, covering the Miami Marlins, and will remain with the media outlet through October 3. He writes game recaps and attends press conferences to interview players.

“I love sports and my major is journalism,” Tovar said. “I keep my writing pretty similar like how I did with The Reporter, but with Pelota Cubana I’m getting experience writing in Spanish.”

Tovar started as a briefing writer for The Reporter in 2019 before moving permanently to the sports section. He served as the paper’s sports editor this past school year until he graduated in May, but not before writing more than 50 articles. During his tenure at MDC, Tovar wrote about the volleyball, softball, baseball and the men’s and women’s basketball teams.

He earned an associate’s degree in mass communications/journalism from Kendall Campus in May and is transferring to the University of Florida this fall, where he will major in journalism. He aspires to write for the Independent Florida Alligator—the daily student newspaper at UF—and gain radio and television experience at the school.
