Daniela Hernandez, a School for Advanced Studies senior at North Campus, started an organization called ShareJoy that focuses on helping impoverished children in Kenya acquire the resources needed to receive an education.

“ShareJoy’s goal is to be able to help designated groups of children get an education,”  Hernandez said.

She was inspired by the kind generosity of others while being treated for Crohn’s disease, an immune system deficiency that causes the immune system to attack the digestive system.

Her organization started as a service-learning project for her classes and grew into a small, self-run project funded by her own efforts. The goods include clothes, meals, medical necessities and shoes.

The donations are shipped through mission trips associated with Ekklesia Church, a local Christian church that sends the goods collected, including clothes, meals and medical necessities to South America and the Caribbean.

Hernandez plans to host more events and hopes to make her organization a non-profit in the future.
