Scholarship Honoring Cuban Martyrs Open Until Feb. 22

The Martyrs of February 24, 1996 Scholarship is accepting applications until Feb. 22.

The scholarship—a $1,200 prize—is open to Miami Dade College students who have completed at least 12 credits toward an associate’s degree or certificate program by the end of the current term.

It is offered in honor of Armando Alejandre, Carlos Costa, Mario de la Pena and Pablo Morales—four men who lost their lives on a search-and-rescue mission after their airplanes were shot down by two Cuban Air Force MiG airplanes.

Students must complete an application, have a GPA of at least 3.0, and submit a three-page essay about the struggle for human rights in Cuba. The application should also include a copy of the student’s most recent transcript or degree audit.

Recipients of the scholarship will be required to attend an Award Ceremony.

The application is available here.
