Salua Rivero was one of three students chosen from around the globe to participate in the Hemlock Hospice Research Project paid internship at the Harvard Forest, a 4,000-acre parcel of land in central Massachusetts run by Harvard University.
Rivero, who is studying philosophy, is a sophomore attending the Honors College at Wolfson Campus. She was chosen for the internship because of her work at the Earth Ethics Institute and in the arts.
The Hemlock Hospice Research Project is an arts based science communication project focused on the decline of Eastern Hemlock Forests in New England. She will conduct an investigation on their decline and then create an art piece that reflects the findings with the other students attending the internship.
“I think [the internship] will be perfect for getting the experience I need in my future career. What I am going to be doing in this internship is what I want to do as a career, which is ecological research, being outdoors and incorporating art into it,” Rivero said. “I feel like I will benefit from knowing if this is what I want to do or not.”
