Ronsard Mondesir, a biology major in the Honors College at North Campus, has been selected to receive the Hites Transfer Scholarship. Only ten scholarships were awarded from a pool of 3,700 applicants nationwide.
The merit-based scholarship—a $7,500 prize—is available to students who are members of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges, and are transferring to a baccalaureate program in a four-year institution.
“It’s really amazing that people related to my story,” Mondesir said. “I am glad to know that people believed in me and my passion for what I believe in.”
Mondesir was born and raised in Gonaïves, Haiti, and moved to Florida in 2014. Five years later, he graduated in the top five percent of his class at North Miami Senior High School.
He serves as the director of leadership and service at PTK’s chapter in North Campus and president of the campus’ Chemistry Club. He is also a STEM ambassador at the North Campus, an active voter registration fellow for the Andrew Goodman Foundation, and a breast cancer awareness advocate with the Women’s Breast & Heart Initiative.
Mondesir aspires to become a biochemist so he can provide affordable and accessible healthcare to the people in his community. Mondesir is expected to graduate from MDC this summer.
