Lady Sharks Márquez Wins AVCA Assistant Coach Of The Year Award

Miami Dade College assistant volleyball coach Iván “Bomba” Márquez was named the American Volleyball Coaches Association 2022 Assistant Coach of the Year. 

The 41-year-old has been an assistant coach at MDC for the past three years. He helps with offensive and defensive tactics. This past year, the Lady Sharks came within one win of a national title.

“He is a hard worker, a great coach and he’s always there to help the team get better,”  said Lady Sharks Head Coach Origenes “Kiko” Benoit.

Márquez has also served as the Miami Volleyball Academy head coach since 2020 and just finished his first season as head coach of the girl’s volleyball team at Archbishop Coleman F. Carroll High School where he coaches his daughter, Ivaney.

Before embarking on a coaching career, Márquez played volleyball professionally for 17 years, competing in Italy, Brazil, Greece, Spain, Portugal, France, Belgium, Finland and Argentina. In 2008, the middle blocker, who got his nickname—Bomba—because of his powerful spikes, represented his home country of Venezuela at the 2008 Olympics.
