Four students from the Wolfson Campus math team won first-place at the Florida mathematics Olympics on April 6 at Santa Fe College.
The competition, which covered topics such as trigonometry, precalculus, calculus 1 and calculus 2, required mathletes to solve 10 math problems; they were given 10 minutes per question.
Apart from the team’s first-place win, two members—Gustavo Falcon and Elvis Cabrera—also won first and second place, respectively, in the individual component of the tournament. It required participants to solve 40 math problems in 90 minutes without a calculator and 10 problems in 45 minutes with a calculator.
“Math makes sense, you know? So I appreciate it for that,” said Falcon, a 17-year-old student in the School for Advanced Studies at Wolfson Campus who aspires to pursue a career in computer science.
The math team is overseen by mathematics professors Alvio Dominguez and Arturo Presa.
