I never thought I would have to crawl through a window to get anywhere in life.
I’ve heard people talk about knocking on doors to get somewhere, and opening gates — all metaphors for opportunities that I had never paid attention to until the morning of July 20.
There I was: business pants, a blue blouse and high heels trying to fit my head through my small living room window while my angry dog tugged on the cuff of my pants.
All because I had misplaced my house key.
Two hours later I was speeding through the expressway, zigzagging my way through traffic to get to an interview that would change the course of my life.
A five person committee was waiting for me to decide if I was fit to be the next editor-in-chief ofThe Reporter, the student newspaper at Miami Dade College.
Finally, at 11: 45 a.m., I got out of my beige Toyota Corolla and made my way to a conference room at Wolfson Campus. Walking there felt like I was about to go through surgery. My heart was pounding, palms sweaty, the whole nine yards.
At noon, an hour long interview started. I was asked every single question imaginable.
After the interview, I sat by an emergency exit door waiting for the verdict.
As I waited, I stared at the cracks in the pavement and began to think of all the stories that sidewalk must have. It made me think about how I never want to stop writing stories.
Editor-in-chief or not, what makes me a journalist is not great grammar, but a desire to find stories and the truth, whatever that may be.
When I started as a staff writer at The Reporter I never thought I would have the opportunity to become Editor-in-Chief. Now it feels like the ad in the fifteenth issue of The Reporter seeking an editor-in-chief for the 2012-13 school year was placed there just for me to see.
I’m glad five other people thought so too.
I am thrilled to have been chosen to serve as Editor-in-Chief of The Reporter.
The reason I crawled through a window was not because I misplaced my house key, but because walking through doors is too simple. All great stories never have a perfect beginning or end.
As J.K. Rowling once said, “I’ll be writing until I can’t write anymore.”
I can’t wait to share my stories with all of you at Miami Dade College this year.
