Katherine Wallace-Fernandez, who served as editor-in-chief of The Reporter during the 2017-2018 school year, has been selected to participate in the New York Times Student Journalism Institute.
Wallace-Fernandez, 20, will start the two-week long institute on May 18. Under the supervision of staff writers from The New York Times, she will cover stories in New York City but will dedicate most of her time to copy-editing.
Wallace-Fernandez, who graduated from MDC in December of 2018, is currently an English major at the University of Florida. She serves as a crime and breaking news reporter at The Independent Florida Alligator, the student news publication at UF.
In October of 2018, while at The Reporter, she was named Reporter Of The Year by the Associated Collegiate Press in the two-year colleges category. In 2017, she won first-place from the Florida College Systems Press Association in the humor column category.
“The Reporter definitely helped start my career as a journalist,” Wallace-Fernandez said. “Without it, I wouldn’t have gotten where I am now.”
