Reporter Alumnus Lands Job As Editorial Assistant At Teen Vogue

Aiyana Nicole Ishmael, who served as a sports writer for The Reporter during the 2017-2018 school year, has landed an editorial assistant position at Teen Vogue

Ishmael, 23, started on Aug. 23. Her responsibilities include writing articles on political identity culture, fashion and creating social media content. She also handles Versha Sharma’s—Teen Vogue’s editor-in-chief—travel and meeting schedule.

“I just hope to do the best job possible and to create interesting and important articles within Teen Vogue’s coverage,” Ishmael said.

At The Reporter, Ishmael covered softball, women’s basketball and volleyball. She earned an associate’s degree in mass communications from Kendall Campus in May of 2018 before transferring to Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University in Tallahassee.

During her time at FAMU, Ishmael served as editor-in-chief of the school’s award-winning magazine, Journey, from April 2019 to May 2020. Ishmael also hosted her own podcast—Black Fat Fashion—where she interviewed members of the Black, plus-size and fashion communities.

From May through August of 2020, she participated in a digital media internship at the Poynter Institute for Media Studies in St. Petersburg through The Dow Jones News Fund. From August of 2020 through January of 2021, she served as the audio producer for WriteLane, the podcast of Tampa Times Pulitzer prize-winning reporter Lane Degregory.

This past March, she participated in The New York Times Student Journalism Institute before graduating from FAMU with a bachelor’s degree in journalism in May.

Most recently, she served as an intern at The Wall Street Journal from June through August.
