Two Reporter Staffers Invited to New York Times Student Journalism Institute

Monique Madan and Lazaro Gamio of The Reporter have been selected to the New York Times Student Journalism Institute.

The 14-day fellowship allows student journalists to work with staffers from New York Times and Boston Globe to create a newspaper. Some of the work is published in The Times.

Gamio and Madan were selected along with 22 other students during a national search. The project will be held in Tucson, Arizona from Jan. 2-16.

Madan, the only community college student selected for the Institute this year, is majoring in journalism in the Honors College. She is also a part-time early morning reporter at The Miami Herald.

Gamio, 21, is majoring in Electronic Media at New World School of the Arts. He is a freelance designer at The Miami Herald. At The Reporter, Gamio is responsible for creating the design of the paper.

Madan and Gamio also won three awards apiece from the Florida College System Activities Association this past November.

“It is a privilege to have been chosen to take part in the Institute,” Gamio said. “I am excited to work alongside so many talented students.”
