Gabriel Cortez, a biology major in the Honors College at Wolfson Campus, presented his STEM research at the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science in Salt Lake City, Utah from Oct. 19 to 21 and will attend the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students in Phoenix, Arizona from Nov. 1 to 4.
Cortez began his research last May as part of the STEM Summer Research Institute at the school of science. His work was funded by the Department of Education STEM SPACE grant under the supervision of professor Edwin Ginés-Candelaria. He focused on developing a three-dimensional structure of the protein DnaA found in Clostridium taeniosporum, a bacterium.
“Attending these conferences is of pivotal importance to my career, as I will be acquiring valuable career experience by presenting my research results to experts in the area and networking with important professionals of the career I chose to follow,” Cortez said.
