The mellow piano music that plays in the background is one of many aspects that sets his classroom apart. The other<\/span>\u2014<\/span>that <\/span>Duasso is blind. <\/span><\/p>\n

Duasso has been blind since an incident in 1985, when he was jogging and the then 23-year-old middle school teacher was shot in the head during a robbery. The bullet entered Duasso\u2019s left temple, severed the optic nerve, and exited through his right eye. <\/span><\/p>\n

He struggled to find work for years, but was able to earn his master\u2019s and doctorate degrees in international education from Florida International University<\/span><\/strong><\/a>. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Duasso was unemployed until 1993, when he was hired by Miami Dade College to work as an English professor at InterAmerican Campus. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI was on total welfare. From medicare and social security disability checks, and food stamps,\u201d Duasso said. \u201cIn fact, I was at the welfare office when I called home and heard that I had gotten the job at MDC 24 years ago.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Going back to teaching had its challenges. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was scary to walk into a black class,\u201d Duasso said. \u201cThe only connection you have are the voices of others and what they want you to hear of themselves.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The soft-spoken, Cuban-born immigrant approaches life positively. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a survivor,\u201d Duasso said. \u201cI survived what would be the most horrible day…You have to battle the day. You have to battle the voices in your head that tell you that you\u2019re no good.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In order to not grow bitter and destructive, Duasso let go of what happened. He does not dwell on what would have been if his sight was not taken. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI love [teaching now]. I\u2019m never bored,\u201d he said. \u201cBoredom is not a good thing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Duasso manages his classes with the help of his assistant and former student Connie Giffuni. She helps him navigate around campus. Her job includes reading things to Duasso, guiding him to his classes and helping him grade papers. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a different perspective [working for him],\u201d said the 23-year-old, who graduated with an English bachelor\u2019s degree from Florida International University and attributes him for inspiring her to pursue her degree. \u201cI was his student and now I\u2019m his assistant.\u201d \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Duasso dresses on his own. He picks his clothes out by texture. He feels the denim of the jacket and the stripes on his blue shirt. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf I don\u2019t have a plan, everything becomes messy,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Getting to work proves a challenge, but he finds a way. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the worst, but I do try and get a ride from my sons or neighbors,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the more than 30 years since the incident, Duasso has found peace with his attacker. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cA few years after his sentence he sent me a letter asking forgiveness,\u201d said Duasso who does not keep tabs on where his attacker is. \u201cI forgave him. I did it partially to psychologically do the right thing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Duasso feels that his success in life and recovery comes from a higher power. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI believe that my relationship with God is good, and that he loves me, and that he takes care of me. It\u2019s been 30 years of this belief and he\u2019s never let me down,\u201d Duasso said. \u201cIn whatever I\u2019ve been able to do, I believe my relationship with God has brought me through many storms or many dark storms. It\u2019s an important part of who I am and my survival.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Duasso is seen as an inspiration by his students and faculty at the College. <\/span><\/p>\n

Michael Vensel, the English and communications chairperson at Kendall Campus, describes him as \u201chard working, caring, always there for his students.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

That is a sentiment shared by 19-year old Carlos Agudelo, an international relations major who is enrolled in his ENC 1102 class. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s living proof of discipline and passion,\u201d Agudelo said. \u201cCollege life is not only about knowledge but about experiences and memories, and his class offers that, an incredible memory.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Duasso, who is married, met his wife Ciri Diaz at Westchester Christian church in 1986, a year after he lost his sight. He thinks of his marriage as a partnership with effective teamwork.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere are people that are my friends, that can never get through me being blind. Everything about me is \u2018Manny, blind\u2019 and then everything else. Everything is blind,\u201d Duasso said. \u201cMy wife didn\u2019t see that, you know? It was \u2018Manny, creative and energetic.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

During his time away from the classroom, Duasso enjoys life in Miami. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI love the beach in the summer. I love the Everglades in the winter,\u201d he said. \u201cI love art. I love it when people describe colors and shapes. My wife described some really beautiful paintings.\u201c <\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s Duasso\u2019s way. He sees beauty in life. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re engaging, they don\u2019t notice being blind,\u201d Duasso said. \u201cI never flat-out say it, because I don\u2019t want to scare any new students. I try to build a bond with them and tell them what happened.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
