{"id":10439,"date":"2017-03-17T20:41:32","date_gmt":"2017-03-18T00:41:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/?p=10439"},"modified":"2021-03-09T15:03:49","modified_gmt":"2021-03-09T20:03:49","slug":"femininity-men-perceived","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/femininity-men-perceived\/","title":{"rendered":"How Femininity In Men Is Perceived"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an interview with Fresh Air\u2019s Terry Gross, actress Meryl Streep shared that it wasn\u2019t until she played a tough and cold hearted boss in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0458352\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><i>The Devil Wears Prada<\/i><\/span><\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that she ever had a man tell her he empathized and related to one of her characters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Streep has played a plentiful selection of characters from Sophie Zawistowski in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sophie\u2019s Choice<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to Julia Child in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Julie &amp; Julia,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and it would be difficult to find a woman who doesn\u2019t relate or look up to at least one of her characters. Mostly because women are allowed the luxury of being a hyper-feminine damsel in distress, a tomboy, a femme fatale or anything in between or not. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Men, on the other hand, are shamed into a small mindset that only allows them to be dominant, tough-skinned and heroic to achieve masculinity. They may admire women if they share the same traits, but if women portray opposite traits such as being submissive and gentle, men must look at them as someone they desire to have. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are men, who are not interested in masculine characteristics, who have escaped this small mindset and explored their feminine side. They admire women like Elle Woods in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Legally Blonde<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, understand the Spice Girl\u2019s stance on \u201cgirl power,\u201d and appreciated photographer Petra Collins\u2019 girly aesthetic and portrayal of girlhood. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women have fought to reclaim feminine behaviors and ideas such as the housewife, makeup, and the color pink can be powerful symbols for themselves, but men face a different challenge before they can embrace being feminine. They must overcome the fear of being \u201cgirly\u201d in a gender that is known for throwing around terms such as \u201creal man\u201d and \u201cboys don\u2019t cry.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gay communities even have their own, more obvious phrases to show their preference of masculinity like \u201cmasc4masc.\u201d Fortunately, there are men who exist today who are able to explore and show the power of male femininity. Author Diriye Osman wore a dress on the cover of his book<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Fairy Tales for Lost Children\u2014<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a short story collection narrated by gay Somalis as they learn about their own identities\u2014and shared on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VICE<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s website that he felt empowered when he wore the dress. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Designer Marc Jacobs, who is also known to have worn dresses, has used the used term \u201c#malepolish\u201d on social media pictures of his own painted fingernails and even created unisex beauty products described as \u201cboy tested, girl approved.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another designer, Kenneth Nicholson, creates apparel that not only touches on the subject of gender boundaries, but also expands the limit on the options in men\u2019s clothing with silhouettes consisting of mostly flowing tunics and bell bottoms. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photographer Tyler Udall challenges the expected modern traits of men in pictures of young men being portrayed as vulnerable and intimate in his project, <em>Auguries of Innocence<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though these men exist to show feminine traits in men can be celebrated, it will be a long and complex journey before most men can view femininity as admirable.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In an interview with Fresh Air\u2019s Terry Gross, actress Meryl Streep shared that it wasn\u2019t until she played a tough and cold hearted boss in The Devil Wears Prada that she ever had a man tell her he empathized and related to one of her characters.
