Awaiting quarters, rows and rows of games sit idly, illuminating a dark room full of teens socializing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arcade Odyssey has remained a popular mainstay in Kendall, providing patrons with hours upon hours of digital entertainment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Located at 12045 S.W .117th Ave., the arcade was founded in 2011 by avid video game collector Rick Medina. Its popularity has been seen as a bonus for the video game community. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI guess you can say I&#8217;ve been collecting games for over 25 years&#8230;I was always captivated by them, and I was also captivated by the technology behind them. It was a natural step to go from the collection to an arcade,\u201d Medina said in an interview with Groupon.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from the assortment of games old and new, there are also competitions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andrew Quintero has been competing in the biweekly <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Street Fighter V <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tournaments. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was never a big player of fighting games. I got into them when I went into college,\u201d said 31-year-old Quintero. Failure proved informative for Quintero, who said he only got better after losing to better players and mimicking them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His competitive nature started with the release of the popular <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Capcom VS SNK 2.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0He is usually accompanied at Arcade Odyssey by his friend, 31-year-old Peter Castillo. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis arcade has been here for a long time, as far as I remember,\u201d Castillo said. \u201cI\u2019m usually here every two weeks to compete.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Street Fighter V <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the most recent installment in the popular fighting series, and despite its mixed initial reception from fans and critics, has been popular among the tournament scene.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every week, the arcade hosts a different tournament, with every other week either being <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/streetfighter.com\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><i>Street Fighter V <\/i><\/span><\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or the popular racing game, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Initial D.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The arcade also attracts those not interested in competing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m not a fan of tournaments nor never really joined one, but it\u2019s cool seeing people coming together and connecting based on on common thing,\u201d said nineteen-year-old Kameron Salehi. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mechanical engineer appreciates the arcade, and sees it as way to preserve some gaming history. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI do like the arcade,\u201d Salehi said. \u201cI\u2019m not a full fan of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Street Fighter<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but I mostly go there for pinball, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crazy Taxi<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">House of the Dead, Galaga, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Initial D.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nineteen-year-old Florida International University student Stacy Santalis shares that sentiment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt gives people access to old school games as well as providing a sense of community within the arcade, since it\u2019s a social setting,\u201d Santalis, a psychology major said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That sense of community is important for the competitive scene. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEveryone who comes here every two weeks for Street Fighter knows each other and it\u2019s nice,\u201d Castillo said. \u201cThose who are new are welcomed to come by whenever.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The blinking lights of a Killer Instinct arcade machine blare as the X-Men machine across from it repeats the same demo animation.
