{"id":11823,"date":"2017-08-23T18:34:50","date_gmt":"2017-08-23T22:34:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/?p=11823"},"modified":"2021-03-01T17:14:29","modified_gmt":"2021-03-01T22:14:29","slug":"three-sharks-selected-m-l-baseball-draft","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/three-sharks-selected-m-l-baseball-draft\/","title":{"rendered":"Three Sharks Selected In MLB Draft"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A trio of former Miami Dade College baseball players were selected in the 2017 Major League Baseball Draft in mid-June.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outfielder Kevin Williams was picked \u00a0in the 13th round by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/angels\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Los Angeles Angels<\/span><\/strong><\/a>. Right-handed pitcher Alex Valverde and lefthander Ivan Pelaez were both selected by the Tampa Bay Rays. Valverde was picked in the 22nd round and Pelaez in the 33rd round.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11824\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11824\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-11824 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Kevin-Williams_web.jpg\" alt=\"Headshot of baseball player Kevin Williams.\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11824\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">WILLIAMS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Williams played two seasons for the Sharks from 2014 to 2016. He had a .269 batting average, two home runs, 32 RBI and 11 stolen bases. In his sophomore year he played in 37 games, improved his batting average to .356, added 23 RBI and 21 runs and had eight stolen bases. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cKevin Williams had two good seasons with me,\u201d said MDC Head Baseball Coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/price-vies-winning-off-field\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Danny Price<\/span><\/strong><\/a>. \u201cHe was an outstanding student and a hard worker.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After MDC, Williams attended Samford University. In \u00a02017, his lone season at the school, he lead the team with<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11 home runs and added 34 RBI and 13 doubles while scoring 37 runs.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11825\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11825\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11825\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Alex-Valverde-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Headshot of Alex Valverde.\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Alex-Valverde-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Alex-Valverde-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Alex-Valverde-683x1024.jpg 683w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11825\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">VALVERDE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Valverde played at MDC during the 2016-2017 season after transferring from ASA College. He posted a 1.80 ERA, had 92 strikeouts and an 8-1 win-loss record in 85.0 innings at MDC. During the 2017 FCSAA Baseball State Tournament, Valverde was named to the All-Southern Conference First Team and he received Florida College System Athletic Association All-Tournament Team honors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSomething Coach Price told me that stuck with me was to not try too much,\u201d Valverde said. \u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s the same game even though it\u2019s on a pro level.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11826\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11826\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11826\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Ivan-Pelaez_web-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Headshot of Ivan Paleaz.\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11826\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PALEAZ<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pelaez played for MDC in 2014 and was a key contributor to the Sharks pitching staff. As a sophomore he had an ERA of 2.25, 26 strikeouts and a 3-2 win-loss record in 36 innings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During his two seasons at Faulkner University, Pelaez pitched in 38 games and had an 18-6 win-loss record, while posting a 2.66 ERA and 165 strikeouts in 179 Innings. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy goal is to hopefully work myself up to the big leagues,\u201d Pelaez said. \u201cBut if baseball doesn\u2019t work out then I want to be a teacher.
