Actor\/director John Malkovich, composer\/producer Eric Alexandrakis, and photographer\/director Sandro Miller have partnered together for the electro-ambient record <\/span>Hell On Earth<\/span><\/i>. <\/span><\/p>\n

The album, the trio’s 6th collaboration, has been described by the music site Spectrum Culture as \u201ca blend of philosophy and electronica that aims to be more than novelty.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Hell On Earth\u2019s<\/span><\/i> 10 tracks begin with <\/span>Revelation,<\/span><\/i> an apocalyptic auditory experience. Crashes, screams, shattering glass and other cacophonous sound effects paint a picture of a dystopia in the listener\u2019s mind. The next track, <\/span>Inferno,<\/span><\/i> features crackling flames, thunder, and eerie, ambient noise that continues into <\/span>Purification & Regenesis. <\/span><\/i>The glitchy, futuristic beats and atmospheric synthesizers on<\/span> Awakening<\/span><\/i> flow smoothly into <\/span>Skepsis 1<\/span><\/i> [Migration].<\/span><\/p>\n

In <\/span>Skepsis 1<\/span><\/i> we finally hear Malkovich\u2019s voice. Over the electronic noise he theatrically narrates a series of Aristotle\u2019s truisms, including \u201cno great mind has ever existed without a touch of madness,\u201d reflecting the album\u2019s theme. <\/span><\/p>\n

In <\/span>Skepsis 2<\/span><\/i> [The Order of The Universe] the Aristotle monologue continues and chaos ensues, with dramatic strings and syncopated, industrial-sounding percussion. <\/span>Skepsis 3 <\/span><\/i>[The Disorder Of The Universe] is the most melodic track on the album, with choir-like pads and sparkling arpeggios layered under glitchy beats.<\/span><\/p>\n

Skepsis 4<\/span><\/i> [Entropy] devolves back into ambient noise, then further into a rain track that continues into<\/span> Repurification<\/span><\/i>, four minutes of rain and storm sounds concluding into a small trickle. The final track, <\/span>Electroorgani<\/span><\/i>c [The Beginning] features Malkovich recounting \u201cThe Allegory of the Cave\u201d from Plato\u2019s <\/span>The Republic<\/span><\/i>, with the robotic vocal effect creating an eerie mood.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hell On Earth <\/span><\/i>is challenging and leaves the listener both contemplative and slightly disturbed. <\/span><\/p>\n

The album tests the limits of what we consider music but is it music? From its conceptual tone to the soundtrack-style production, <\/span>Hell On Earth<\/span><\/i> might be more suited as a short film than an album. While time-tested, the idea of technology persisting past human extinction has been overworked ever since Ray Bradbury\u2019s 1950 short story <\/span>There Will Come Soft Rains<\/span><\/i>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Even though <\/span>Hell On Earth<\/span><\/i> was supposed to offer a unique perspective on modern smartphone addiction, it falls flat. Moreover, the concept isn\u2019t clear within the actual album. Apart from the apocalyptic sound effects in the first two tracks, <\/span>Hell On Earth<\/span><\/i> would appear to be more about Ancient Greek philosophers than humanity\u2019s destruction through technology.<\/span><\/p>\n

Each track on <\/span>Hell On Earth<\/span><\/i> is a soundscape that creates a visual journey in the mind\u2019s eye. The album succeeds in pushing boundaries and provoking thought. However, the concept falls flat with its hackneyed criticism of modern technology and social media. <\/span><\/p>\n

Ultimately, <\/span>Hell On Earth<\/span><\/i> is worth a listen for the open-minded listener, but best avoided by those who prefer music they can sing along to.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
