It will mark the film&#8217;s debut in South Florida. <br \/>PHOTO COURTESY OF FRENESY FILM COMPANY<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A year after <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moonlight <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0brought Miami and the LGBTQ+ community to the national film stage,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Call Me By Your Name<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the opening night film of the 2017 Miami GEMS Film Festival, brings things full-circle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200bThe film, about a young adult (Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet) who falls in love with his father\u2019s assistant (Armie Hammer) in Italy, made waves after its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. As the film travelled the festival circuit, earning its critical acclaim, it landed at the steps of Jaie Laplante, the director of the Miami Film Festival.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b\u201cImmediately, we recognized it as a ground-breaking film which we believe will be remembered as one of the decade\u2019s most important movies,\u201d Laplante said in an email interview with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Reporter.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200bThe film\u2019s ground-breaking status draws similarities to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moonlight<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Barry Jenkins\u2019 coming-of-age drama about a gay black man in Miami. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both films ranked as the best film in their respective year on Metacritic, a review aggregator, while a number of critics have favored <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Call Me By Your Name <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as the front-runner for Best Picture at the 90th Academy Awards<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">less than a year after <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moonlight<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> claimed the title for itself, a fact not lost on Laplante.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b\u201cThe [success] of \u2018Moonlight\u2019 will be felt for many years to come,\u201d he said. \u201cI think the success of \u2018<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moonlight<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 will give confidence to creatives working on stories with LGBT characters that their stories have proven worldwide impact.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200bThat worldwide impact can be felt at home.<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Call Me By Your Nam<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e opens the third year of the GEMS Festival, continuing the festival\u2019s streak of bringing nationally-acclaimed films to Miami\u2019s door.
