{"id":12713,"date":"2017-11-24T17:00:36","date_gmt":"2017-11-24T22:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/?p=12713"},"modified":"2020-09-24T16:07:27","modified_gmt":"2020-09-24T20:07:27","slug":"blockbusters-make-case-oscars-best-picture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/blockbusters-make-case-oscars-best-picture\/","title":{"rendered":"Blockbusters Make A Case For Best Picture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a year of unprecedented change, the 2017 Oscar race might be next on the list.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the Academy Awards have traditionally been dominated by art films produced and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">distributed by smaller studios, 2017 has given room to a number of blockbusters to launch\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">competitive Oscar campaigns including <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dunkirk<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wonder Woman<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get Out<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These include re-releasing films to freshen voters\u2019 minds, hosting question-and-answer\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">screenings with filmmakers and actors and sending out<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> For Your Consideration<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> DVDs to\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">voters<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all in hopes of bolstering the chances of their blockbuster film\u2019s nomination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warner Bros. is in an especially enviable position. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dunkirk<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Christopher Nolan\u2019s critically-lauded World War II epic, has long been considered a frontrunner for Best Picture since its release. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consistently dubbed as Nolan\u2019s best film, the film earned major praise for its story structure, direction, acting and Hans Zimmer\u2019s intense score. The film also grossed an impressive $525 million against a $100 million budget, giving Warner Bros. a leading contender in the Oscar race outside of technical categories (editing, art direction, special effects, etc.).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The studio also holds the title of releasing the highest-rated superhero film on Rotten Tomatoes, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wonder Woman<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The film, starring Gal Gadot (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/portrayal-of-batman-in-batman-v-superman-dawn-of-justice-receives-criticism\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice<\/span><\/a>, Furious 7<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) as the Amazonian princess, became the studio\u2019s first critical and commercial success for its DC film universe with critics commending its direction, script and message of female empowerment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warner Bros. has capitalized on this, making major pushes for Gadot and director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0420941\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Patty Jenkins<\/span><\/a> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monster<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) in their respective categories, including a Best Picture campaign.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other studios haven\u2019t fallen behind. Universal has begun to push <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get Ou<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">t, Jordan Peele\u2019s directorial debut for Best Picture. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the film was released in late February, a rather ignored section of the year by Academy voters, the film\u2019s cultural resonance and its addressing of social issues has made it linger among the Hollywood sphere. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walt Disney Studios has also begun an extensive campaign for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beauty and the Beast<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, its live-action reimagining of the fairy-tale epic directed by Bill Condon (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dreamgirls, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Parts 1 and 2<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), with For Your Consideration<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">advertisements appearing on entertainment websites.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The studios are hoping to take advantage of 2009 and 2011 rule changes in the Best Picture category, which allowed between five and ten films to be nominated for the award. This was\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">changed to allow films that made ground in technical categories to be more competitive in the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Best Picture race, something evidenced in the nominations of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inception <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gravity<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the blockbusters still have to contend with award favorites like<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/call-name-open-gems-film-festival\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Call Me By Your\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Name <\/span><\/i><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Florida Project<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2017 has given rise to the possibility that a blockbuster film can\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">compete with an art one, something that will be tested when Oscar nominations are announced on Jan.23.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a year of unprecedented change, the 2017 Oscar race might be next on the list.
