{"id":12747,"date":"2017-11-24T18:14:28","date_gmt":"2017-11-24T23:14:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/?p=12747"},"modified":"2021-01-21T12:33:09","modified_gmt":"2021-01-21T17:33:09","slug":"undocumented-resident-haitian-author-tells-story-haitis-new-book","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/undocumented-resident-haitian-author-tells-story-haitis-new-book\/","title":{"rendered":"From Undocumented To Resident\u2014Haitian Author Tells His Story And Haiti\u2019s In New Book"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wolfson Campus alumnus David Frederick hopes his first book, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lakay<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, helps readers have a different perspective about his homeland<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Haiti. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frederick\u2019s 186-page memoir was released on Oct. 24. The 27-year-old, who came to the United States when he was 18, began writing the book two years ago. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI want people to see Haiti can mean courageous. Haiti can mean resilient. Haiti can mean beauty,\u201d Frederick said. \u201cHaiti can mean so many beautiful, great things other than what they\u2019ve always seen Haiti as.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frederick says the title,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Lakay<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which means \u2018home\u2019 in English, was chosen to help readers find \u201chope in hopeless situations.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the memoir, readers can find Frederick\u2019s vivid descriptions of his childhood in St. Marc, his explanation of historical events like the massacre of de la scierie, his transition to the United States, his participation in the Trail of Dreams while at MDC and why he wants people to come together. \u00a0Bible verses, photos and a forward by Year Up CEO \u00a0and Founder Gerald Chertavian are also included. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDavid\u2019s story is an important one: it shows the immense talent, creativity, and passion shared by young adults across this country,\u201d Chertavian said. \u201cI felt proud as I read through the book, getting a deeper insight into the challenges David has overcome and the accomplishments he has celebrated.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Writing Process<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On his iPhone, Frederick has hundreds of notes, ranging from full chapters to sentences, which he has written during slow times at his full-time job as an AT&amp;T retail consultant. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf I\u2019m not doing much, I just pick up my phone and start putting notes and I just love it,\u201d Frederick said. \u201cWhen I go home, [I] transcribe the notes to the book, the computer, \u00a0and just check everything in paragraphs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chapter five, Trail of Dreams, and chapter seven, The Audacity of Faith, in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lakay <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relied heavily on his old journal entries. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI wanted to put in the book what I felt at that time and I could only do that by going through and re-reading the journals,\u201d Frederick said. \u201cNot just thinking of what happened, but really writing what it is.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He does this when his family is asleep, but his wife Elpidia Frederick teases him about his constant phone use and the lack of sleep he gets. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m not doing anything wrong. Trust me, I\u2019m not doing anything,\u201d Frederick said. \u201cI\u2019m just taking notes or I\u2019m googling something.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The couple, who have been married for three years, lives in a four-bedroom home in North Miami Beach with their two-year-old son Davheed Jasper Frederick. They are expecting their second son\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">soon. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Coming To America<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frederick moved to the United States more than nine years ago. He started work on his associates in arts degree in international relations in 2009 at Wolfson Campus. Frederick graduated from the College in 2013 and is now a part-time student at Florida International University, working toward a bachelor\u2019s degree in international relations. He is also founder and host of Impact The Outcome, a podcast about Haiti\u2019s history and tourism. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the College, he was president of Minority Students For College Success, where students can receive tutoring services and listen to speakers, and MDC Wesley, a Christian club. \u00a0He was also a member of Year Up, a program that helps disadvantaged students learn work skills and intern at companies. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He arrived in the United States in July of 2008 on a visa but overstayed his visit hoping to get political asylum. In 2010, Fredrick <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">received Temporary Protective Status after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti. He became a resident of United States after marrying his wife in June of 2014 but has never forgotten the state of being \u201cin a limbo\u201d undocumented students face.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frederick <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was devastated by the Trump Administration\u2019s decision to terminate TPS for Haitians on Nov. 20. More than 50,000 people under the program need to leave the United States by July 2019\u2014or they will face deportation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe need to push and find a way for Congress to realize, okay these people and Haiti is not ready,\u201d he said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>On The Grind <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frederick is determined to keep pushing forward. He began filming his documentary series Window To Haiti, where he displays the food, history, and residents of cities like Jacmel, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">J\u00e9r\u00e9mie<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Port Au Prince, and St. Marc. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt&#8217;s to really show Haiti in a way that\u2019s never been seen before,\u201d Frederick said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An episode has already been filmed in Jacmel. He plans to release the show in April 2018. Frederick hopes to have the series available on National Geographic, PBS, Netflix, or NBC. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frederick hopes his entrepreneurship galvanizes others to do better. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cToward the end of the book, I talk about the beauty, the crime\u2014 I talk about the struggle,\u201d Frederick said. \u201cI wanted to end it in a hopeful way.
