TV personality, journalist and culture aficionado Alejandro Ri\u00f3s released his first book <\/span>La Mirada Indiscreta<\/span><\/i> on Oct. 23.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 774-page book is a compilation of Ri\u00f3s\u2019 weekly columns published in <\/span>El Nuevo Herald<\/span><\/i> from 2007 to 2017. The columns are listed in chronological order and range from topics such as his childhood, family, movies, classic rock music, Cuba and Miami. Each column is around 600 words.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ri\u00f3s, who is currently the hispanic media specialist for Miami Dade College\u2019s media relations department, came to Miami in 1992 as a political exile from Cuba. Ri\u00f3s started working at Wolfson Campus<\/span><\/a> the same year. At the College, he began the Cuban Cinema Series, where he showcased Cuban films, like <\/span>Fresa y Chocolate <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>La Bella Del Alhambra<\/span><\/i>, at the Wolfson Campus auditorium.<\/span><\/p>\n

Later TV Mart<\/span>\u00ed<\/span> offered to convert the series into the TV show <\/span>La Pantalla De Azogue<\/span><\/i>, which was later called <\/span>Pantalla TVM<\/span><\/i>. More than 17 years later, the show was cancelled because of a change in administration. In 2007, Ri\u00f3s began the TV program <\/span>La Mirada Indiscreta<\/span><\/i> on Am\u00e9rica TeV\u00e9, a cultural program where he discusses Cuban cinema with Cuban directors and filmmakers. The show is available every Saturday on Channel 41 at 9 p.m. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe program, just like the columns, are like a democratic history of Cuban cinema where everything can appear,\u201d Ri\u00f3s said. \u201cIn Cuba, the history of cinema has always excluded some directors because of them being prohibited, but I include everyone. That\u2019s the idea of the program, to include everyone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The title is a play on the Spanish title of Alfred Hitchcock\u2019s <\/span>Rear Window<\/span><\/i>. In Spanish, the movie is named <\/span>La Ventana Indiscreta<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBeing indiscreet is, especially as a social or political term, to reveal what somebody does not want to reveal. In this case, it\u2019s the Cuban Government,\u201d Ri\u00f3s said. \u00a0\u201cThey would prefer if the book or the program didn\u2019t exist, because I am putting in information that they don\u2019t want to release at the disposition of the public.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Ri\u00f3s, 65, waited for the right opportunity to publish the book.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI always wanted to publish a book, but I didn\u2019t want to release a book just to have it published,\u201d Ri\u00f3s said. \u201cI waited to have something important to tell and I think here is something interesting that people can relate to.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

When he decided he wanted to publish his columns, he contacted Pablo Di<\/span>\u00e1<\/span>z Esp<\/span>\u00ed<\/span>, director of <\/span>Diario de Cuba<\/span><\/i>, and Ladislao Aguado, editorial director of Hypermedia, a publishing company under <\/span>Diario De Cuba<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

La Mirada Indiscreta<\/span><\/i> could be understood as a summary of what has been the sociocultural Cuban life in the past 10 years,\u201d Aguado said. \u201cAlejandro Ri\u00f3s\u2019 columns in <\/span>El Nuevo Herald <\/span><\/i>have been marking the guidelines and principal successes of our events as a nation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He presented his book at the Miami Book Fair\u2019s De La Entrevista A La Cr<\/span>\u00ed<\/span>tica Cinematogr\u00e1fica on Nov. 18. At the event, Ri\u00f3s\u2019 books sold out.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI was satisfied because everything sold out. I don\u2019t know how many books were sold, but there were 10 or 20 [people] who were left without books,\u201d Ri\u00f3s said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ri\u00f3s has written hundreds of weekly columns for <\/span>El Nuevo Herald <\/span><\/i>since 2007. The columns are published online on Wednesday and published in print on Thursday. <\/span><\/p>\n

He chose to write columns because he prefers to write from personal experience. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTo me it\u2019s one of the most interesting genres because it’s a genre that\u2019s very personal,\u201d Ri\u00f3s said. \u201cIt\u2019s part of a journalist\u2019s personal experience. I prefer to practice journalism through personal experiences without ignoring the truth.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

His first column was about his hope for young Cuban filmmakers. His last column in the book is about his wife of 30 years, Esther Ri\u00f3s, who is a Network Coordinator at West Campus. The two met in Cuba when they worked at the Cuban Ministry of Culture.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always supported him. I\u2019ve admired him since the beginning; he is a very cultured man. He has been like a teacher to me. He has transmitted his knowledge and enriched my life,\u201d Ri\u00f3s said. \u201cHis book is a deserved recognition of his large trajectory as a journalist, critic and cultural promoter. We are all very proud of him.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Ri\u00f3s has plans for a sequel, but wants to publish it in two years instead of 10.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Aguado, presentations of the book are planned at Books & Books in January, and at the<\/span> Feria Internacional del Libro in Madrid this <\/span>June. <\/span>Hypermedia is also planning to have their own book fair in the spring to showcase their authors.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPeople feel fulfilled when they have a child, publish a book and plant a tree,\u201d Ri\u00f3s said. \u201cI have <\/span>accomplished all three.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
