Released on Dec. 14, the rap-rock and rap-pop album features artists like Beyonce and Kehlani. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike the aggressive, offensive persona in his early albums, this new release exposes the rapper\u2019s softer side, seen in albums like 2010\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recovery. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Revival<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the ever popular, drug-addicted and violent persona Slim Shady is nowhere to be heard. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having abandoned the shock value and rough, raw vocal style, the new smooth-voiced Marshall Mathers is almost unidentifiable. The lead single and first track on the album, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walk On Water,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a soft, reflective piano ballad featuring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/beyonces-new-album-was-the-best-kept-secret-in-pop-among-a-sea-of-2013-releases\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Beyonce<\/span><\/a>. On <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Believe<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Eminem adopts current hip hop trends, rapping in a syncopated style over a trap beat. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, he adopts 2017\u2019s social justice craze throughout the album. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Untouchable <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he discusses racial inequality, and calls out band Die Antwoord for their use of racial slurs. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like Home<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a radio-ready hit with packaged synths featuring Alicia Keys, is an anti-Trump anthem based on a freestyle performed at the BET Hip Hop Awards. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the track, he speaks out against Trump\u2019s transgender ban in the military, a far cry from the homophobia and anti-gay slurs rampant in his early lyrics. Likewise, it\u2019s hard to picture the controversial figure behind controversial songs like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bonnie and Clyde \u201897 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just Lose It <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rapping alongside the gentler and more thoughtful Ed Sheeran on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">River. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The album, like most of Mathers releases, also takes influence from classic rock with samples of Joan Jett\u2019s<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I Love Rock and Roll<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and The Cranberries\u2019 90s hit <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zombie<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In Your Head,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the latter track, Eminem showcases some insecurity when he laments the lack of success of his 2009 album <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relapse<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, threatening to abandon his rap career. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nowhere Fast,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which features Kehlani, is 2017\u2019s answer to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Love The Way You Lie<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Castle<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an apology to his daughter, Hailie, for addiction and overdoses. The song reflects on Eminem\u2019s life before she was born as he struggled to make it in the music industry. The remorse shown in the song is an emotion not typically heard in Eminem\u2019s music. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Eminem of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Revival <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has lost the hard edge that made him hated by mothers all over America at the height of his career. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once an innovative, controversial outsider to the rap game, he now represents the commercialization of hip-hop, one he criticized in his landmark song, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Way I Am<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While containing some strong tracks, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Revival <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ultimately falls flat.
