They were far from bad albums, but the five I\u2019ve selected offer a good mix of genres, and really represent some of the best music this year. If anything, it\u2019s a testament to the quality of the music this year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s been a crazy year, but music has been stronger than ever. I\u2019m happy to see some great debuts, comeback efforts and just general surprises in the world of music. I would like to stress that these albums are my own opinion and I know there will be plenty of disagreements. Without any further delay, here are my five favorites of 2017. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"><i>5. Their <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SATURATION <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trilogy, released is in 2017, are ambitious albums full of some of the best lyrics and production in rap music. The second, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SATURATION II,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the strongest and sees the group channeling other groups like A$AP Mob, Odd Future and even the ever-revered Wu-Tang Clan. Like those groups, they display a bravado missing from rap music that is put on full blast. Songs about awful childhoods, drugs and love are recurring, but it\u2019s so fresh, so raw and is a promising introduction to the new era of rap groups. As an added bonus, like any good boy band, these beautifully harmonious songs are interwoven into the rap songs. It\u2019s not an easy listen at times, but it\u2019s an experience that is definitely worth it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"><i>4. As true as it is, she\u2019s almost had a Kanye-level of evolution throughout her career, as each album builds upon the previous and improves on the sound (with the exception of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Honeymoon, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a decidedly weaker effort). <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lust for Life <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aims to shut her detractors up, playing with her earlier motifs. The songs all hit Lana\u2019s iconic themes such as summer (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Summer Bummer), <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feminism (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">God Bless America \u2013 and All the Beautiful Women in It<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and, of course, pure nostalgia and love (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Love). <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Production is littered with trap beats, strings and the occasional acoustic guitar while featuring an impressive guest list of artists and producers like A$AP Rocky, Playboy Carti, Metro Boomin and even former Fleetwood Mac singer Stevie Nicks. Del Rey dominated in making the best album of the summer and one of the best of the year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"><i>3. 4:44 <\/i><\/b><b style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">by Jay-Z<\/b><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13009\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13009\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-13009\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/444-300x300.png\" alt=\"Album cover.\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/444-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/444-125x125.png 125w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/444-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/444-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/444-32x32.png 32w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/444-50x50.png 50w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/444-64x64.png 64w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/444-96x96.png 96w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/444-128x128.png 128w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/444.png 1800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13009\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PHOTO COURTESY OF ROC NATION<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Magna Carta&#8230;Holy Grail <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was easily the most disappointing album to come from the once masterful Jay-Z. Four years after that, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4:44 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proves to be his strongest release in more than a decade. Detailing the highs and lows of his career, Jay-Z\u2019s central theme is that of racism and humility. After more than a year of infidelity rumors, feuds with Kanye and fatherhood, Mr. Shawn Carter uses his vulnerability as a platform to spit the strongest lyrics of his career. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Story Of O.J. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">details the trials and tribulations of black men in the United States, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kill Jay Z <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mentions his feud with rapper Kanye West and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bam <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">addresses his need for an ego in the music industry. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4:44<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stands above any other rap album this year, and shows that the best MCs can hold their own among the SoundCloud generation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"><i>2. Just please. The third album by the Los Angeles bassist, known professionally as Thundercat, is such a strange, over-the-top and disorganized mess of ideas. Yet, it somehow blends together to make this one of the best releases of the year. Think about it like this: what other album devotes entire songs to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dragon Ball Z <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gundam? <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which artist this year decided to have an album featuring Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald and Wiz Khalifa? It\u2019s perfect for jazz, rap and even dance fans, with just the right mix of yacht rock and R&amp;B. No other album can claim any of those titles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"><i>1. Ryan Adams thinks the opposite. Freedom from his marriage has obviously imprisoned him. Trapped by his loneliness and finding no escape anytime soon, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/ryan-adams-finds-freedom-prisoner\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prisoner <\/span><\/i><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seems like his only way out of the rut of his love life. It\u2019s the best albums I\u2019ve reviewed this year, and the only one to make it on this list. The shaggy-haired, North Carolina native released the best album of his career in 2017 and the only album to remain consistent in tone, themes and overall mood.
