This Guy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the past four years, English tutor Alexander Sorondo has helped students at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/search\/?q=%22Kendall%20Campus%22&amp;_siq_page=1&amp;_siq_sort=relevance\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Kendall Campus<\/span><\/a> speech lab with assignments for their public speaking classes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At home he puts his writing techniques into practice, posting film essays online. The essays are in response to films featured in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a film reference book edited by noted film producer Steven Jay Schneider. It contains several essays written by film critics and professors. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sorondo plans to review all 1001 movies and has dubbed the undertaking the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thousand Movie Project. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So far, he has reviewed 189 movies. They range in topic from classic horror like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bride of Frankenstein <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to film noir like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scarface: The Shame of a Nation.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He has been screening the movies at Tea and Poets, 5701 Sunset Dr 126, a coffee shop located at the Shops at Sunset Place. The screenings began last year in June, with nine films been shown so far. The dates are chosen randomly once a month or to correspond with certain events, such as a viewing that \u00a0coincided with the anniversary of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Naked Gun.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSo far we&#8217;ve shown some older movies, from the 1920s and &#8217;30s, but lately I&#8217;ve been bringing it more into the modern era with movies like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[the 1990 mini-series]<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, The Monster Squad, Spaceballs <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Naked Gun 2 1\/2,\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> he said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reception to the screenings has been positive, much to Sorondo\u2019s surprise. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was nervous, at first, thinking that people might not have much fun with eighty-year-old movies, but I think the environment, Tea &amp; Poets, plays a major role,\u201d he said. \u201cThere&#8217;s something about sitting around with friends, we feel like we&#8217;ve got this big public space all to ourselves, that makes people engage more with the movie.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anaelys Bazan, the host of Tea &amp; Poets\u2019 Open Mic Nights, is one of Sorondo\u2019s biggest supporters. She strongly believes in the project and is excited for its future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are so glad to have been part of his growth and can&#8217;t wait to see what the future holds,\u201d Bazan said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sorondo has been pleasantly surprised by how older films have managed to have an impact on students. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSomebody cried when we showed <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bride of Frankenstein <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recently, she was so moved by it,\u201d Sorondo said. \u201cPeople were laughing out loud when we showed a Charlie Chaplin double feature in November. People adored the Marx Bros comedy <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Night at the Opera<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Naked Gun<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had a pretty good reception too.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That positive reception has extended into Sorondo\u2019s work life as well. Pavel Klein, one of his co-workers at the Kendall Campus speech lab, is impressed with the ambition of the project. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two have bonded over their love of films. Klein writes film reviews for the film review site <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Punch Drunk Movies<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and has appeared on Sorondo\u2019s film podcast, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thousand Movie Project Podcast<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is available on SoundCloud.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf Ernest Hemingway, Han Solo and Michael Scott somehow had a love child, it would be Alex,\u201d Klein said. \u201cI look forward to his continued adventures through 1001 films and whatever else he&#8217;s going to come up with down the line.
