{"id":1314,"date":"2015-04-21T14:14:36","date_gmt":"2015-04-21T18:14:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/?p=1314"},"modified":"2021-07-23T12:53:53","modified_gmt":"2021-07-23T16:53:53","slug":"bank-santander-awards-grants-for-spanish-language-good-governance-institute","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/bank-santander-awards-grants-for-spanish-language-good-governance-institute\/","title":{"rendered":"Bank Awards Grants For Spanish-Language Good Governance Institute"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spain-based financial institution Banco Santander gave Miami Dade College\u2019s program for good government in Latin America, Goberna Las Americas, a $500,000 donation on March 30.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGoberna Las Americas Miami aims to create a virtual and in-person continuing education space for Spanish-speaking professionals across the globe interested in enhancing their knowledge of public policy, transparency, citizen security, gender equality and other related fields,\u201d said Tatiana Mackliff, director of International Education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Goberna Las Americas opened last fall and has served more than 150 students who study in \u00a0month-long virtual, individual or group courses. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Mackliff, the program is geared toward Spanish-speaking leaders from throughout Latin America, the Caribbean, Spain and the United States. Participants have come from Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador and Argentina.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students who <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">complete at least one virtual course receive a certificate of participation issued by both institutions: Miami Dade College and the Instituto Universitario de Investigaci\u00f3n Ortega y Gasset (IUIOG). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students who take six virtual courses and complete the final coursework may apply for a university Mag\u00edster degree from Spain\u2019s IUIOG.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Participants can also come to MDC for three-day courses of on-site executive public administration courses in Spanish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Goberna Las Americas website, the program is geared to those individuals who have an interest in politics and government, public administration, communications, political strategy and specific key policy issues\u2014including: immigration, security, fiscal responsibility, decentralization, gender equality and law, and judicial transparency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forbes <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">magazine, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.santanderbank.com\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Banco Santander<\/span><\/a> reached $7.1 billion in profits in 2011.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey are the most important bank in Spain,\u201d said Juan Mendieta, MDC communications director. \u201cTheir role is more of a funding partner.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Goberna Las America Miami is a program funded by the Spanish Ortega-Mara\u00f1on Foundation. Instructors at the institute are professors at MDC and the Ortega-Mara\u00f1on Foundation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At a March 30 ceremony at Wolfson Campus, MDC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/mdc-president-honored-by-south-florida-hispanic-chamber-of-commerce\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">President Eduardo J. Padr<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #3366ff;\">\u00f3<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">n<\/span>, Banco Santander chairperson Ana Patricia Bot\u00edn and Ortega-Mara\u00f1on Foundation president Jos\u00e9 Varela Ortega, signed the agreement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Santander Universities is a division of Banco Santander that serves as an outreach program to support education. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Santander Corporate Website states Santander Universities, has collaborated with universities for more than 18 years on a unique global initiative.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They have set up institutions in countries like Brazil, Russia, Argentina, Mexico, Germany and more. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the past year they have allocated more than $146 million Euros to research and their university programs. They plan to spend $1.7 billion Euros until 2018. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the new school year, Mendieta wants to see more students take advantage of the program.<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019d like to see some growth and serve an even greater number of students,\u201d Mendieta said.
