Fall Out Of Style Boy: With a career spanning almost 20 years, it seems that Fall Out Boy is desperate to cling onto any sort of relevance.

On Jan. 19, pop-rock band Fall Out Boy released<\/span> MANIA,<\/span><\/i> the group\u2019s third LP since their five-year hiatus following their foray into pop with albums like <\/span>Save Rock and Roll<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>American Beauty\/American Psycho<\/span><\/i>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Described by the band as a \u201cpalette cleanse\u201d from their previous albums, <\/span>MANIA <\/span><\/i>is a genre-bending departure from the pop-punk sound that made them famous. Fans of Fall Out Boy won\u2019t hear anything familiar in this release, which features unexpected forays into electronic dance music and dancehall.<\/span><\/p>\n

Young And Menace<\/span><\/i>, the lead single of the album, is widely disliked among fans<\/span>\u2014<\/span>for good reason.The cacophonous bass drop sets the tone for a consistently ear-splitting barrage of sounds.<\/span><\/p>\n

The packaged drum machines on this track are a constant throughout the tracklist. <\/span>HOLD ME TIGHT OR DON\u2019T<\/span><\/i> is driven by a thumping Latin beat, riding the wave of songs like <\/span>Despacito. <\/span><\/i>It plays like a tropical house tune and is a radio-ready earworm reminiscent of Maroon 5<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Last Of The Real Ones<\/span><\/i> features Patrick Stump<\/span><\/a>\u2019s screeching vocals over an anthemic production jam-packed with commercial pop hooks. <\/span>Heaven\u2019s Gate<\/span><\/i> is a highlight of the album and a welcomed relief from the loudness. Its R&B harmonies allow Stump to showcase his soulful vocal style, instead of straining to be heard over busy production. <\/span>Sunshine Riptide<\/span><\/i>, featuring Nigerian reggae artist Burna Boy, is a questionable attempt at combining rock and dancehall. <\/span><\/p>\n

Overall, <\/span>MANIA <\/span><\/i>is an overproduced mishmash of genres at maximum volume. <\/span><\/p>\n

The packaged synths and infectious hooks are miles away from the pop punk sound that defined Fall Out Boy in the early 2000s. <\/span><\/p>\n

For someone who enjoyed the band\u2019s early singles like <\/span>Dance Dance<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>Thnks fr th Mmrs<\/span><\/i>, the new direction Fall Out Boy has taken since 2013\u2019s <\/span>Save Rock and Roll<\/span><\/i> holds very little appeal. The wordy titles and emo-pop charm they were known for 15 years ago have been discarded in favor of over-processed attempts at commercial success. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
