I\u2019m just hoping <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/call-name-open-gems-film-festival\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Call Me By Your Name<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wins Best Picture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s certainly up against a stacked field, one in which it\u2019s not the favorite. The race, a virtual three-way contest between<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, The Shape of Water <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lady Bird<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has been thrown curveballs of precursor awards distributed all over the place and the #MeToo movement sending shockwaves through the industry. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early favorites like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Call Me By Your Name<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, about a passionate romance between a 17-year-old and 24-year-old, has seen mild criticism over its age gap while <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Disaster Artist<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, detailing the unusual process of creating Tommy Wiseau\u2019s equally unusual opus, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Room<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, managed to garner only a single nomination (Best Adapted Screenplay) after sexual harassment allegations surfaced against James Franco, the film\u2019s star and director. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It says something about the strength of the movement, as Franco was widely expected to earn a Best Actor nomination and the film could\u2019ve easily filled the remaining slot in the Best Picture category.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That remaining slot is also something worth mentioning since the Academy continues its\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">baffling decision to not use the 10-film rule they voted to implement. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Films like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wonder Woman<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had heavy campaigning and a women-empowerment message and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blade Runner 2049 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">earned high praise throughout the year. It\u2019s incredibly surprising that the Academy refuses to acknowledge the creativity of big-budget studio films. Especially in the case of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wonder Woman<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which was completely shut out of the awards while DC\u2019s prior (and critically-panned) effort <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suicide Squad<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> earned an Oscar<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it\u2019s almost an injustice to the diverse year that was 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s not to say the nominations didn\u2019t have pleasant surprises. Paul Thomas Anderson&#8217;s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phantom Thread<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Daniel Day-Lewis\u2019s final film (until he\u2019s undoubtedly brought back for a film that \u201cspoke to him\u201d), drew in six nominations, including Best Picture, Director, Actor and Supporting Actress. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christopher Plummer, the only great piece in Ridley Scott\u2019s good <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All The Money in the World<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, also earned a Supporting Actor nomination, becoming the oldest person to ever be nominated for a competitive acting award. That\u2019s to say nothing about the Best Director race, with Greta Gerwig (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lady Bird<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm1443502\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Jordan Peele<\/span><\/a> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get Out<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) both nominated for their directorial debuts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s hard to make definitive predictions on what will win since the awards aren\u2019t for another month and a half.
