Eric Wooden aims to make people look cool in them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wooden, 29, is the founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/thecoolmiami.bigcartel.com\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The Cool Miami<\/span><\/a>, a clothing brand that specializes in urban graphic T-shirts. After five years of selling T-shirts out of his 1999 Ford Focus, Wooden opened his first standalone shop, The COOL, in Liberty City on Feb. 9.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI came back to my [old] stomping ground,\u201d said Wooden, who graduated from Miami Northwestern Senior High School in 2006. \u201cI could\u2019ve put it anywhere, but why would I want to put it anywhere?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wooden\u2019s journey wasn\u2019t an easy one. After dropping out of William Penn University in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oskaloosa, Iowa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2007 and a brief stint at Miami Dade College, Wooden found work at a warehouse and a post office to survive. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He found himself in a state of unfulfillment until 2013 when, during a conversation with a friend, he realized his life\u2019s calling was to produce T-shirts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI can\u2019t just work for thirty years of my life looking for a retirement check,\u201d Wooden said. \u201cI have to work for myself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That drive led Wooden to pursue his love for drawing, something he discovered through comic books. After three months of dabbling with various designs, Wooden sold his first T-shirt. For the next five years, he continued selling the shirts out of his car.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was hard, driving up and down,\u201d Wooden said. \u201cPeople staying in Broward wanting this, people staying in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/search\/?q=%22Kendall%20Campus%22\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Kendall<\/span><\/a>. It was a good run.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13421\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13421\" style=\"width: 288px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-13421\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Eric-Wooden-009-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Inside Wooden's store.\" width=\"288\" height=\"543\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13421\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">OMAR NEGRIN \/ THE REPORTER<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wooden tried getting his merchandise into stores. After presenting his line to a number of retailers\u2014and a number of rejections\u2014he received a yes from Cool J\u2019s and Simon\u2019s Sportswear, with his shirts appearing at all of their locations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During that time, Wooden also enrolled in a 5-week, 10-session business management and successful marketing course sponsored by the Miami Bayside Foundation. His stellar participation led the Foundation to grant him a $30,000 loan to start his business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey did a hell of a job,\u201d Wooden said. \u201c[The courses] made me open up my eyes and look at the business world different.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael Sellinger, the loan programs director at the MBF, says the credit goes to Wooden.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe\u2019s got a lot of energy and a lot of ideas and a lot of drive,\u201d Sellinger said. \u201cHe put the initiative. He had the gumption to push and push and push.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wooden\u2019s mission is to create a stylized look that conforms to current trends while also making a statement. His shirt designs have messages like Racially Profiled and D.O.P.E &#8211; Dollars Over Poverty Everyday. Others feature the images of cultural icons like Mike Tyson, Tupac and Scarface. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI have to see what event is going on in the world, what season it is, what color,\u201d Wooden said. \u201cIt comes into one category.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With his politically-inclined clothes, Wooden hopes to engage both adults and children in his brand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy clothes are not just for adults, I also make them for the younger generation,\u201d Wooden said. \u201cWhen they can speak to both parties, you\u2019ll win.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His newfound success has also renewed Wooden\u2019s interest in education. Wooden currently takes classes at the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carrie P. Meek Entrepreneurial Education Center and at North Campus. He is pursuing a degree in business administration and plans to graduate in December of 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI had two goals in life: to get the store and get the degree,\u201d Wooden said. \u201cI got one, now imma (sic) get the other.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With his store now open, Wooden is jubilant. He is currently expecting a son with his girlfriend and has expanded his brand to include hats and jeans, with The COOL\u2019s customer traffic higher than Wooden expected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ve been in the game five years. They know who I am<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they just come in,\u201d Wooden said. \u201cIt didn\u2019t really hit me until the first customer came in.
