{"id":1361,"date":"2015-04-07T15:28:06","date_gmt":"2015-04-07T19:28:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/?p=1361"},"modified":"2021-07-26T16:25:50","modified_gmt":"2021-07-26T20:25:50","slug":"assisted-suicide-euthanasia-has-its-place-with-the-terminally-sick","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/assisted-suicide-euthanasia-has-its-place-with-the-terminally-sick\/","title":{"rendered":"Assisted Suicide Has Its Place With The Terminally Sick"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Euthanasia should be legalized all over the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although assisted suicide may sound harsh, it could actually be the best option for that ill person. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When someone is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/staying-strong\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">terminally ill<\/span><\/a>, they are no longer capable of taking care of themselves and are not the person they use to be. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How can we allow them to continue suffering?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <a href=\"http:\/\/brainandspinalcord.org\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">brainandspinalcord.org<\/span><\/a>, a persistent vegetative state \u201coccurs when, after a coma, a patient loses cognition and can only perform certain, involuntary actions on his or her own.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They cannot take care of themselves, eat, use the restroom, and worst of all will not be able to communicate. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do we sit here and act like we\u2019re heroes when we are making life miserable for those people? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are trapped in their mind and bodies, left to view everything in the world but not interact with it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is not murder, but instead it&#8217;s setting them free.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Terri Schiavo&#8217;s<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">case, she suffered massive brain damage and was in a vegetative state due to hypoxic encephalopathy, a brain injury caused by oxygenation starvation to the brain. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael Schiavo, Terri\u2019s husband, sought out the services of attorney George Felos, a right-to-die litigator. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Feb. 25, 2005, Judge George W. Greer, decided on the feeding tube removal date of \u00a0March 18, 2005. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On March 21 Terri was announced dead. Terri suffered a potassium deficiency that led to cardiac arrest, then shortly after her brain was deprived of oxygen for 14 minutes which led to massive brain damage. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Adrian Owen is the Canada Excellence Research Chair in Cognitive Neuroscience and Imaging at The Brain and Mind Institute, Western University, Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His studies show that only 20% of the brain dead patients can sort of respond with their brain when he asks simple questions but they are still not capable of doing anything else. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In my opinion, if a person wants to go when they are in this severe state we should honor that wish and see to it that they go in a humane way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allowing people to suffer when they have no hope of recovery is cruel and unusual punishment.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Euthanasia should be legalized all over the United States.
