The MCU was an ambitious idea that has paid off extensively, with each film proving to be a massive commercial and critical success. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each film has its fans and detractors, so here is a list of my five favorites. To keep things from getting too recent, I did not include <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Panther <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infinity War<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Captain America: Civil War <\/i><\/b><b>(2016)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Director(s): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anthony and Joel Russo<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Phase: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2014, the Russos took on their first MCU film with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Captain America: The Winter Soldier. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Known for directing the pilot episode of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arrested Development<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and a couple episodes of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Community<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the two successfully directed a great superhero film. Two years later, they brought one of the strongest MCU films in the canon with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/captain-america-civil-war-exceeds-expectations\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Civil War<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loosely based on the comic of the same name, the Avengers find themselves conflicted within their morals, with Captain America facing a moral dilemma. This is the one that shifted everything and leads perfectly into <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infinity War. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has the usual Marvel trappings, but it also does a good job of balancing the heroes it introduces and welcomes back. Despite missing Hulk and Thor, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Civil War <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">introduced the world to Black Panther while giving audiences a glimpse of Tom Holland\u2019s take on Spider-Man. Guardians of the Galaxy <\/i><\/b><b style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">(2014)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Director(s):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James Gunn<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Phase: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The writer of the two live-action <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scooby-Doo <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">films directed a sci-fi film starring the fat guy from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parks and Recreation<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a talking raccoon. Sure, this sounds like a strange set up for a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simpsons <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">joke but it turns out to be one of the freshest Marvel films in recent memory. Taking an obscure comic series and turning it into a smash hit, James Gunn\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt2015381\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guardians of the Galaxy <\/span><\/i><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">effectively combines humor, science-fiction and a soundtrack that rivals a Tarantino film to make something truly unique. Coming at a time when superhero movies felt stale and big blockbusters were just overstuffed CGI-fests, along comes this gem of a romp to show the world that a group of ragtag misfits in space can save the world. Spider-Man: Homecoming<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Director(s): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jon Watts<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Phase: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First things first: Hannibal Buress being canon in an MCU film is easily the greatest thing, ever. The first film in the MCU to star everyone\u2019s favorite bug-themed superhero (sorry Ant-Man), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt2250912\/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spider-Man:Homecoming<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was a great look at the life of post-<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Civil War<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Peter Parker (Tom Holland). It was part coming-of-age story and part superhero flick, complete with Michael Keaton\u2019s turn as villain Vulture. It\u2019s a fun and totally-consistent film, full of all the usual tropes that come with a Spidey story. Here, the humor never feels forced or out of place. Instead, every joke feels right and every supporting character feels like they fit into the larger narrative. The action and special effects are the standard fare, but its the characters that make any Spider-Man film great. Thor: Ragnarok<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Director(s): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taika Waititi<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Phase: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taika Waititi is much better known for directing the deadpan comedy <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What We Do in the Shadows<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Those skills were put to good use with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/ragnarok-finds-humor-among-action\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thor: Ragnarok<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as it is the funniest film the Marvel canon. Taking on a lighter tone (and brighter palette) than most superhero movies, the third film in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thor <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">series changes things up by putting its titular hero\u2019s charm to good use. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thor: Ragnarok <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">takes inspiration from all great campy \u201880s films, such as the gaudy and bright colors from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flash Gordon <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to the science-fiction spectacle that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Star Wars <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was.<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thor:Ragnarok<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sets new standards for comedic superhero films, standards that are going to pretty hard to top.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13915\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13915\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13915\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IRON-MAN-3-210x300.jpg\" alt=\"Movie poster.\" width=\"210\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IRON-MAN-3-210x300.jpg 210w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IRON-MAN-3-717x1024.jpg 717w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IRON-MAN-3.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13915\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PHOTO COURTESY OF MARVEL STUDIOS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"><i>1. It also propelled Robert Downey Jr. into the highest-grossing actor of all time territory. Before that, in the year 2005, Shane Black revitalized RDJ\u2019s career after near-collapse with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That film was Black\u2019s directorial debut and showed the world that Downey was a phenomenal actor (2008 also brought his performance in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tropic Thunder)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1300854\/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iron Man 3 <\/span><\/i><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was a match made in heaven. All of the great Shane Black-isms (narration, playing with time and a great love for noir storytelling) are present. What sets it apart is how well the story plays out. It plays on themes like age, post-traumatic stress disorder and the realization that no matter how powerful anyone may seem, it can all come to rapid end. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iron Man 3 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not only elevated the MCU\u2019s storytelling but finally gave a great screenwriter\/director his chance to shine with a big blockbuster.
