{"id":1405,"date":"2015-04-07T12:47:10","date_gmt":"2015-04-07T16:47:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/?p=1405"},"modified":"2021-07-28T14:04:05","modified_gmt":"2021-07-28T18:04:05","slug":"teaching-financial-literacy-at-mdc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/teaching-financial-literacy-at-mdc\/","title":{"rendered":"Teaching Financial Literacy At MDC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Financial coaching at Single Stop offices on campus begins with students figuring out what their financial goals are and finding means of achieving them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the one-on-one meetings students fill out a detailed budget form detailing their day-to-day spending. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAt first it was difficult because I was juggling a lot different things in my life,\u201d said Robert Holmes, a former Miami Dade College student and program client. \u201cBut I learned to prioritize and we created a plan that helped start paying my student loans back, as well as manage my credit and lower my interest rates with some help from the loan agents at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sambla.no\/refinansiering\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Sambla<\/span><\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on the budget form, financial coaches who are employees of the non-profit organization Catalyst Miami provide personalized and free programs and counseling to all MDC students, faculty, and their families. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMost people spend much more than they think,\u201d said Darren Lidell, Financial Director for Catalyst Miami. \u201cWe want to positively impact people\u2019s finances by making them see their habits.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The partnership between Catalyst Miami and Single Stop began just over a year ago. During this time, students have been able to tailor their program and its impact. Ranging from two weeks to several months, Catalyst Miami deals with questions ranging from the most popular, such as financial credit management, to figuring out finances while attending college.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe best part about the program is how much everyone genuinely cares about us, the clients,\u201d said Andre Williams, \u00a0a mechanical engineering student at MDC who recently completed the program. \u201cIn February, the individual that was coaching told me, asked me to come after hours so we could remove a penalty fee from my bank. He took time out of his own schedule to save me money and teach me a valuable skill.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Modernizing the manner in which students manage their finances is one of the many ways that Catalyst Miami has helped their students. Smartphone applications, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/Mint.com\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Mint.com<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/Levelmoney.com\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Levelmoney.com<\/span><\/a>, provide easy-to-use and habit altering changes that many people seeking counseling can feel comfortable with.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI use three different apps and they\u2019re all very helpful,\u201d said Antonio Goodman, 43, a current MDC student who finished the program in March. \u201cYou can set personal limits, receive constant updates and stay on top of your finances.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Current and previous students praise the program for the positive lifestyle changes that it has brought to them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey teach you how to be financially literate and that is priceless,\u201d Williams said. \u201cKnowing what to do and not to do financially is extremely important here in the United States.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>North Campus<br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tuesday &amp; Wednesday<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tuesdays from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. (By appointment only)<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wednesdays from 9 a.m. \u2013 12 p.m.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Room 1119B<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Wolfson Campus<br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hours of Operation:<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wednesdays from 10 a.m. \u2013 6 p.m. (last apt. at \u00a05 p.m.)<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Room 3115-8<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Kendall Campus<br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wednesdays from 9 a.m. \u2013 5 p.m. (last apt. at 4 p.m.)<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Building R, Room 101-07<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Financial coaching at Single Stop offices on campus begins with students figuring out what their financial goals are and finding means of achieving them.
