Melodramatic Therapy: A year after its release, the themes and messages of Lorde’s Melodrama still manage to provide relief.

2017 brought a lot of new sounds for music. Between Kendrick Lamar\u2019s monumental <\/span>DAMN., <\/span><\/i>Jay Z\u2019s return in <\/span>4:44 <\/span><\/i><\/span><\/a>and the wave that was<\/span> Despacito<\/span><\/i>, there was something any listener could pour themselves out to. An unappreciated element, despite its critical success, was Lorde<\/span><\/a>\u2019s return in <\/span>Melodrama<\/span><\/i>. A year after its release, it\u2019s affected me more than most artists could.<\/span><\/p>\n

When Lorde marked her return in March of last year with <\/span>Green Light<\/span><\/i>, my head perked up. Gone was the girl looking down on fame in <\/span>Royals<\/span><\/i>. In her place was an angry, bitter, melodramatic teen looking for revenge. I felt her progression through her lyrics and music, thinking this would be a new sound.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even afterwards, I didn\u2019t pay much attention. I appreciated the music and thought it was good, but I still never connected to it as much as I\u2019d hoped.<\/span><\/p>\n

And then the break-up happened. The one that makes you wonder what could\u2019ve happened, what you should\u2019ve made happen, <\/span>where did things go wrong. <\/span><\/i>It happened toward the end of 2017, leaving me with all the hard feelings that come with breakups. Having heard the critical acclaim of <\/span>Melodrama, <\/span><\/i>I gave it a listen on New Years\u2019 Day.<\/span><\/p>\n

From the onset, it captured the immediate anger which is common with breakups. Through the bitter rage of <\/span>Green Ligh<\/span><\/i>t (\u201cShe thinks you love the beach \/ you\u2019re such a damn liar\u201d), you can feel the need to release all the emotions that come with a relationship ending. This continues throughout the album (loosely constructed around the concept of a house party), with songs like <\/span>Sober<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>Homemade Dynamite<\/span><\/i> capturing the idea of the \u201cfun\u201d that comes with the beginning of a relationship while others like <\/span>Liability <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>Writer in the Dark<\/span><\/i> examine the loneliness that transpires after. <\/span><\/p>\n

This leads into a two-track realization, with <\/span>Supercut<\/span><\/i>\u00a0examining the nostalgia one feels long after that break-up and <\/span>Liability (Reprise<\/span><\/i>) capping the arc of loneliness that started in its predecessor. <\/span>Perfect Places<\/span><\/i>, the album\u2019s closer, ties up the loose ends of the record by having the character <\/span>\u2014 the heartbroken \u2014 come to terms with their heartbreak and understand that, even though it doesn\u2019t always get better, it\u2019s fine.<\/span><\/p>\n

That realization was something I needed to hear, even if I couldn\u2019t make it right away. Repeated listenings helped get me through that hardness, though, turning me from the angry person from <\/span>Green Light<\/span><\/i> into the person living in their idea of a \u201cperfect place,\u201d an important transition in an evermore important year \u2014 my first year of college.<\/span><\/p>\n

A year into the album\u2019s release, its themes helped mark an important, personal growth. Relationships are hard and break-ups are harder, leading us to try and find happiness in both the highs and lows of life \u2014 and being happy with ending up in the middle. While not terribly successful commercially, Lorde\u2019s <\/span>Melodrama <\/span><\/i>managed to successfully deliver that message \u2014<\/span> both to critics and to me.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
