{"id":14622,"date":"2018-10-19T14:44:38","date_gmt":"2018-10-19T18:44:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/?p=14622"},"modified":"2021-03-01T16:55:05","modified_gmt":"2021-03-01T21:55:05","slug":"miami-raised-quartet-leads-sharks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/miami-raised-quartet-leads-sharks\/","title":{"rendered":"Miami-Raised Quartet Leads Sharks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For as long as Sharks head basketball coach Kevin Ledoux can remember, the Miami Dade College men\u2019s team hasn\u2019t had this much home-grown talent going into a season. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elton Walker, Ben Tal, Albert Hernandez and returning sophomore <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/liberty-city-raised-freshman-shooting-guard-providing-lift-sharks\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Kaevon Tyler<\/span><\/a> will add Miami flavor to this year\u2019s roster. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThese are an excellent group of young men,\u201d Ledoux said. \u201cThey have been great teammates and are the athletic shooters our team thrives with.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of them have history together as teammates on <a href=\"https:\/\/aausports.org\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">AAU<\/span><\/a> teams or as rivals in high school. That experience has helped them form a bond. Here are their stories: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ben Tal<\/b><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14624\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14624\" style=\"width: 354px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-14624\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Ben-Tal-901x1024.jpg\" alt=\"One of the Sharks, Ben Tal about to throw the ball.\" width=\"354\" height=\"483\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14624\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Heady Player: Ben Tal is a six-foot one-inch guard with a basketball IQ that coaches describe as &#8220;off the charts.&#8221; <br \/>CHRISTIAN ORTEGA\/THE REPORTER<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A six-foot one-inch guard out of West Oaks Academy in Orlando, Tal has used basketball to keep him at ease throughout his life. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Born in Brooklyn, he spent the first years of his life bouncing from Israel to Miami to Brooklyn because of his father\u2019s job. But basketball kept him grounded. He played pickup games wherever he lived. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, it wasn\u2019t until he settled in Miami in the seventh grade that he took up the sport competitively. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt all came naturally to me,\u201d Tal said. \u201cEach time I played it, I found more reasons to love it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through constant practice and hard work in the gym, Tal developed a basketball IQ that is \u201coff the charts,\u201d according to Ledoux. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s that high IQ that drew Ledoux to recruit him. Tal took that opportunity to play in a system that maximized his strengths while allowing him to stay close to his family. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tal said it\u2019s his ability to flip the switch between scoring and facilitating that he loves most. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI get more out of the game taking defenses apart,\u201d he said. \u201cOnce I know my defender\u2019s weakness, I move on to the next man on defense until I have their whole team figured out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Elton Walker<\/b><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14626\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14626\" style=\"width: 379px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-14626\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Elton-Walker-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Elton Walker about to make a basket.\" width=\"379\" height=\"581\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14626\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dual Threat: Freshman guard Elton Walker, who played at Miami Killian Senior High last year, is expected to help the Sharks on the offensive and defensive end. <br \/>CHRISTIAN ORTEGA\/THE REPORTER<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basketball wasn\u2019t Elton Walker\u2019s first love. Football was what gave him life. Playing safety and running back for the Palmetto Bay Broncos, a Pop Warner team, he had a bright future in the sport until he broke his hip when he was 12 years old. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Devastated, he thought his athletic career was done. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI had to put in a lot of work after the injury,\u201d Walker said. \u201cAfter I got hurt, I didn\u2019t even want to play sports. I was too worried about putting too much pressure on my hip and reinjuring myself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He possessed the necessary athleticism to succeed in basketball but lacked the fundamental skills to prosper. Walker spent his sophomore year at Miami Killian Senior High School working with coaches after practice to transition from a raw prospect to one of the team\u2019s stars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen I started playing basketball, all I could do was grab rebounds because I still had that football instinct,\u201d Walker said. \u201cWithout my coaches and the practice I put in, I wouldn\u2019t have been able to develop properly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through basketball, the Richmond Heights native gained a second life. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI love everything about it, shooting the ball, playing defense and competing,\u201d Walker said. \u201cIt\u2019s hard to get a better feeling.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walker, a guard, chose MDC because of its fast-paced offensive system and because it allows him to continue to develop. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe\u2019s as hard a worker as they come,\u201d Ledoux said. \u201cHe\u2019s like a sponge, everything you tell him, he does it perfectly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At MDC, Walker has also been afforded the opportunity to continue practicing at his high school, given its proximity to Kendall Campus. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen I left, coach told me that the door was always open,\u201d Walker said. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Alberto Hernandez<\/b><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14628\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14628\" style=\"width: 381px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-14628\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Alberto-Hernandez-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Alberto Hernandez throwing the ball.\" width=\"381\" height=\"567\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14628\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chef Hernandez: Freshman Albert Hernandez is a five-foot ten-inch guard out of Southwest Miami Senior High School is looking to keep opposing defenses on their toes with his shooting range. <br \/>CHRISTIAN ORTEGA\/THE REPORTER<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alberto Hernandez\u2019s life follows the same storyline as many Miamians. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Born in Havana, Cuba, Hernandez left the country when he was seven years old for a chance to prosper in the United States. He arrived in Mexico from Cuba by plane then Hernandez and his family took a four-day bus trip to Miami. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe ride was terrible, just terrible. I was young. I kept getting a rash from the ride and we had little food throughout the trip,\u201d Hernandez said. \u201cIt was all for the better opportunities and life my parents knew we would have here. It was all part of the sacrifice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once they settled in Westchester, he struggled until he learned English. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hernandez wasn\u2019t always a basketball player. He recalls his first memories happening during baseball practice when he was 12. Between drills, he would go to a nearby basketball court and take shots. His baseball coach noticed and suggested he take up basketball. Hernandez never looked back.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He developed a quick trigger, becoming a Cuban Steph Curry, with the green light to take a shot whenever or wherever he wanted, a skill he developed by spending hours practicing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During his senior year, Hernandez broke Southwest Miami Senior High School\u2019s record for points and three-pointers. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe can shoot from anywhere,\u201d Ledoux said. \u201cHe\u2019s the player we want to come in the game during important moments and light the other team\u2019s defense on fire.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Hernandez, a guard, basketball was the best way to advance in life and take advantage of the free education it has afforded him. His ultimate goal is to become a physical therapist so he can provide his two-year-old son, Jayden, a good life. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe\u2019s able to make whatever shot he\u2019s given,\u201d said Tal who played with Hernandez on the Miami Runnin Rebels AAU team.\u201cIt\u2019s like he and I never skipped a beat. We had instant chemistry from our first day at Dade.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Kaevon Tyler<\/b><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14630\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14630\" style=\"width: 398px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-14630\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Kaevon_Tyler-861x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Kaevon Tyler finishing throwing the ball.\" width=\"398\" height=\"482\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14630\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Top Dawg: Sophomore guard Kaevon Tyler averaged 13.8 points and 3.4 rebounds per game for the Sharks last year. <br \/>CHRISTIAN ORTEGA\/THE REPORTER<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lone sophomore from the group of Miami players, Kaevon Tyler is the team\u2019s heart and soul. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The guard averaged 13.8 points and 3.4 rebounds per game last year. Tyler plans to have an elevated leadership role this season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In practice, he shouts at his teammates, encouraging them to play harder and congratulating them when they make a shot. On the court, coaches gawk at his athletic prowess and shot selection. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGuys play with him and they feed off his energy,\u201d said Sharks assistant coach Chris Vincent. \u201cHe can not only shoot the crap out of the ball but he\u2019s always providing the team with energy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raised in Liberty City, it shaped him into the man he is today. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAt any time you can see someone getting shot or robbed,\u201d Tyler said. \u201cBeing able to have the opportunity to get out of that situation and being at MDC is a blessing because even when I go back to visit Liberty City, I dread staying there for too long.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tyler saw his older brother, Alvin Tyler, go down the wrong path.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAfter seeing my brother arrested a few times and shot a few times, I knew this wasn\u2019t the life I was meant to live,\u201d Tyler said. \u201cI had to find a way out.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Tyler was 11 years old, he joined the South Beach All-Stars, now known as Nike South Beach. Tyler attended South Miami Senior High School because it\u2019s a basketball powerhouse in South Florida. Doing so meant that each day he had to wake up at 5 a.m. to commute to school. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While at South Miami, Tyler played against his current MDC teammates Walker and Hernandez. Tyler and the Cobras dominated those games. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur games were intense,\u201d Walker said. \u201cEverytime we got on the court, we gave it our all but there was no stopping Kaevon.
