{"id":14641,"date":"2018-10-19T15:07:11","date_gmt":"2018-10-19T19:07:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/?p=14641"},"modified":"2023-12-06T13:10:18","modified_gmt":"2023-12-06T18:10:18","slug":"food-service-areas-at-three-mdc-campuses-going-green","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/food-service-areas-at-three-mdc-campuses-going-green\/","title":{"rendered":"Food Service Areas At Three MDC Campuses Going Green"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North, Kendall and Homestead campuses began phasing out the usage of styrofoam this semester. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kendall and Homestead replaced all products in their food service areas with biodegradable alternatives. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The change is a result of Miami Dade College\u2019s administration working with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/search\/?q=%22YES!%20Club%22\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">YES! Club<\/span><\/span><\/a> at the campuses, along with contract negotiations with their food vendor, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canteen.com\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Canteen<\/span><\/span><\/a>. The club has focused on environmental and sustainability issues and has been working for years to try and reduce styrofoam usage on campus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think [banning styrofoam] is a very necessary step,\u201d Anouchka Rachelson, the Kendall Campus YES! Club\u2019s adviser said. \u201cI\u2019m very proud of the students\u2019 accomplishment. They worked very hard.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The initiative took effect when MDC negotiated its contract with Canteen earlier this year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the negotiations, both parties worked in conjunction to devise the best solution for replacing styrofoam-based products with ones that are more environmentally friendly. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou want to be socially responsible,\u201d Canteen Regional Director Ramon Gonzalez said. \u201cCustomers are always asking for companies to be responsible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The club\u2019s push began three years ago, when its then-Kendall Campus branch president, Maria Parra, decided that banning styrofoam would be the best start to reducing the college\u2019s environmental footprint.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The students in the club created a video and presentation to support the campaign, wrote petitions and held a peaceful protest on campus. CHRISTIAN ORTEGA\/THE REPORTER<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStyrofoam is a non-biodegradable material that takes 500 or more years to decompose,\u201d Parra said in the video. \u201cI am a changemaker for protecting the environment because we all need to recognize our environmental footprint and the impacts our decisions have on our shared home.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christian Acevedo, the current president of the YES! Club\u2019s North campus branch, said that styrofoam, besides harming the environment, is also a health hazard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cAs styrofoam is heated, it releases toxins,\u201d he said. \u201cLet\u2019s say you have hot food in a styrofoam container. Those toxins that are in the styrofoam can go into your food. I\u2019m pretty sure you wouldn\u2019t want to eat something like that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, while styrofoam is being phased out in the cafeterias and cafes at \u00a0North, Kendall and Homestead Campuses, there is no permanent rule set by the College. The club said that they would like the College to add a rule to its policies and procedures that would require it to use sustainable products. That way, if the contract with the vendors ever fell through, the ban on styrofoam would remain in force. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Danilo de-la-Torre, the president of the YES! Club at Kendall Campus, \u00a0said they will continue to push the college to be more sustainable. Next on the agenda is working on eliminating straws and plastic bags on campus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe College has an extensive track record of environmental sustainability and environmentally-friendly practices going back to the \u201870s,\u201d said Juan Mendieta, MDC\u2019s director of communications. \u201cThis is the right thing to do, and it\u2019s very important to us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>North, Kendall and Homestead campuses began phasing out the usage of styrofoam this semester.
